Re: hair straightening and pregnancy
I am one lenient preggo and do most of the norm you are clearly not suppose to(in moderation) except this one!
I do Brazilian and wouldnt do it while pg. Sorry, JMO.
I think between the chemicals that go into the hair/scalp and then the fumes that go with it.... its not worth it and I will wait till babies are here to get back in there and believe me, I am dying to get this done again.

Re: hair straightening and pregnancy
I know it sounds horrible but i did jhs at 24 weeks now ds is turning one and he's just fine there are no studies about anything so even things like hair color, nail products etc.... So in the meanwhile I guess there are lots of ponytails in your future

I know, and that's the thing: some pregnancy websites say that it is safer to do it in the second trimester, and that there is no real studies to say that ANY of the treatments are harmful. I just wish I could find a safe solution! Even a product or something! the hair that's straight just won't curl, it's so annoying and depressing! ugh!

Re: hair straightening and pregnancy
Do you have a flat iron? I wouldn't do JHS or Brazilian straightening when pg. Too many chemicals... and the smells would make me crazy. JMO though.

Re: hair straightening and pregnancy
Even if the chemicals were totally fine, most hairdressers will not give you any kind of chemical treatment (BKT, JHS, perm) while pregnant because your hair changes a lot while pregnant and there's a chance it won't take to all of your hair - so you'll have some soft, smooth hair and the rest frizzy.
Trust me, I've asked around

Re: hair straightening and pregnancy
As laid back as I am during pregnancy, I would not have my hair straightened during pregnancy. Not only are the effects unknown really, your hair is totally different from what it's normally like when you're not pregnant.. :( I'd hate to mess with it.

honestly, I just blow it out...and day two I dont wash and flat iron.
Some days its up in a ponytail.
As for the hairdresser doing it or not, I have to say it is true, while pg, they may not even consider doing the Brazilian or JHS. its a risk for them too!

Re: hair straightening and pregnancy
What about if you were about to start ttc. If you knew you weren't pregnant at the time of the straightening but were about to start trying, would you still do it?

i would still do it. i just had the keratin done last weekend and asked my hair dresser about it. she said she wouldn't let me do it while i was pregnant, but i'm planning on TTC in a few months and she didn't stop me from getting it this time!

i would do it too. there is no risk to your unborn child if you are TTC, because you are technically not pregnant. And actually from what I've read, the risk is minimal even if you are pregnant. there are no real studies that say that there is harm to the fetus when you have it done. Although, there are also no real studies out there period, i think the bigger issue is that salons can not guarentee that your hair will come out the right way when you are pregnant, because your hair is so different. So i think between the unknown risk to the baby, and that, salons won't do it. I had the opportunity to get my hair done RIGHT before I got pregnant, and couldn't go because something came up, and now I could KICK myself lol!
