Happy Babies?
I was wondering when babies start smiling and acting happy? Emily is only 3 weeks old now -- so I know she's not supposed to smile for real yet, but I just feel like the past few days she's been very fussy and miserable when she's awake and I really just wish I could see a smile to let me know she's okay and I'm doing the right thing for her?
When do you start getting the happy baby faces?

Re: Happy Babies?
I didn't start seeing smiles until she was two months old, and they didn't become frequent/convincing until more like three months.

Re: Happy Babies?
When I went to the Dr for Ryans 1 month visit, the DR asked does he smile yet...I said yes, but thought he was too young for it to be a true smile, and the Dr said it could be!
"Your baby can now track a moving object with her eyes for longer than a couple of seconds. Try passing a colorful rattle in front of her face — you may be rewarded with coos and gurgles of pleasure. Her head is steadier now too, and she may even be able to lift it up when lying flat on her stomach. Short periods of time on the floor will help her strengthen her neck muscles. Learn more fascinating facts about your 4-week-old's development."
This isnt about smiling persay, but it is about being happy, and its all very correct, last night DH was playing with RJ, and you could just see how much he was enjoying it!

Re: Happy Babies?
Look who's baby-talking now Your 1-month-old may gurgle, coo, grunt, and hum to express his feelings now. A few babies also begin squealing and laughing. Be sure to coo and gurgle back, and talk to him face-to-face. He'll enjoy holding your gaze now. If you have things to do, though, he'll still enjoy hearing your voice from across the room.
Even though your baby has been able to recognize you since he was just a few days old, by the end of this month he may be able to show it. About half of all babies this age begin to exhibit an obvious recognition of their parents. (They react differently to mom and dad than they do to strangers.) Your baby may quiet down and make eye contact with you, or he may smile when he sees you.
OOO this is also what it says....

Re: Happy Babies?
Alex is quite possibly the fussiest most miserable baby in the neighborhood, BUT, she has started smiling at me and DH... though infrequent, it does happen. She's 5 weeks exactly. She also recognizes DH's voice. When he approaches and starts talking she gets very very quiet and looks right at him. She doesn't do that with anyone else (except me ) What's truly, truly amazing is that she has started giggling! Granted, not at us or while she's awake... she only does it as she's drifting off to sleep (the first time she did it I freaked out and thought she was having a convulsion or something and then I realized she was giggling!!), but she's done it! Hopefully, SOON, it will happen while she's awake, though knowing her, I doubt it

Re: Happy Babies?
Jake became a more happy baby around 2 months. Not that he was ever really a cranky baby though. (We've been very lucky with him).
He started smiling at around 6 weeks and little by little they became bigger and easier to get out of him. They say when they hit around 3 months is when they are in the "golden" stage. They are generally very happy and congenial, aren't quite teething yet, plus they still stay where you put them.

Re: Happy Babies?
Talia started smiling pretty young - around 3-4 weeks. Now at 6 weeks she has 1-2 periods a day where she is playful - smiles, and is also starting to laugh too. I live for those 5 minutes a day so I hope it happens more often as the weeks go by.

Re: Happy Babies?
Logan looked like he smiled pretty early, like 3 weeks or so but who knows, it may have been gas. He is now 2 months and he smiles and laughs when he looks at us all the time- you can actually see his face light up(started at about 6-7weeks or so). It is so awesome!!!!

Re: Happy Babies?
Rebecca didn't smile until she was almost 4months...she was colic. I thought she would never smile. We she is 13 months now and she is one of the happiest babies ever. She must have cried enough during the first 4 months of her life!
