Has anyone ever installed a sliding door as a room divider?
DH thinks I am crazy, but I want to "re-do" my future laundry room. It's got the 70's dark wood paneling in there, and I do a lot of laundry- I don't want it to feel so dingy-- so I want to paint it white.
It's also the utility room, and has the hot water heater and boiler in it. I would like to install doors-- either louvered doors, or floor to ceiling sliding doors. The family room/playroom will be down there-- and Sasha loves the laundry, so I want it to be safe also when she comes in after me.

When I was growing up my best friend's parents had a ranch house and off the dining room, in back they built what was referred to as the "playroom." It was separated from the dining area with a sliding glass door and glass panels, like you'd find on a patio. It worked for them because all the kids could be playing and the activity was visible but the heavy doors kept the noise levels down.

My mom's house has a sliding pocket door in the basement for what used to be our playroom. It is a great space saver.

Re: Has anyone ever installed a sliding door as a room divider?
Does anyone know what the easiest thing to do is?
Is probably like an 8 x 10 room-- maybe not as wide as 8 feet... just a rectangle. What do I need to install to put a door on one side of it? What would be the easiest thing? There is no doorway/frame-- just one side of the room that will need to be accessed.

Easiest for just an opening like that, would be either sliding doors or louvered doors. Depending on the opening, you might have to get a customer size sliding doors or louvered doors.
Or for the time being, you could also put up pretty curtains to close off the area. But I assume you want some sort of doors so that your child does not go into the room without you.

I actually want to change a few of the doors in my house to pocket doors.
right now we have folding doors separating the laundry room. it's also a pretty good space saver.
