Has anyone ever switched health insurance companies after a life change event?
We had a baby in april, and decided to switch to a different health insurance company since my dhs job allows that after a life change event, such as having a baby. He faxed the paperwork to HR in early June. Yesterday we got a letter from the old insurance company that our coverage ended June 11. But we still haven't received any insurance cards or info from the new company. Meanwhile ds had a well visit with his ped on June 15. So is it possible that won't be covered by either company? Are they allowed to let it lapse? And if so, shouldn't HR have told my dh that could happen so we would have rescheduled the appt for when the new insurance picked up?

Just because you don't have physical cards doesn't mean that it isn't active. Call the company to make sure you are in the system and some companies have temporary cards you can print on the internet.
