Is this something that we have to apply for every year?

Re: Has anyone gotten the STAR letter yet in Suffolk?
Question, if we just bought our house and are pretty much "riding" the previous owners star rebate, we will get a check in the mail right?

WHAT IS THE STAR LOCAL PROPERTY TAX REBATE?
The 2007 Middle Class STAR Rebate Program is an expanded property tax relief program that provides homeowners a benefit in the form of a property tax rebate check. The program provides two types of rebates:
A Middle Class STAR rebate is available for homeowners who receive the BasicSTAR exemption on their property tax bill. These homeowners MUST apply to receive their tax relief. The amount of the rebate is based on the homeowners’ income level. The program provides benefits to taxpayers on a sliding scale based on income from $0 - $250,000. Taxpayers earning more than $250,000 are not eligible to receive a check.
A rebate also is available for homeowners who are senior citizens 65-years or older and receive an Enhanced STAR exemption on their property tax bills. No application is necessary. Enhanced STAR recipients will receive their check automatically.
In either case, the rebate check is in addition to any tax relief homeowners receive off of their tax bills under the Basic or Enhanced STAR.
HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR THE REBATE PROGRAM?
As a homeowner, you qualify if you:
1. Are scheduled to receive the Basic STAR on your 2007/2008 (Dec 2007-Nov 2008) property tax bill.
2. Had a combined income (for all resident property owners and their spouses) for the 2005 tax year that was no more than $250,000; and
3.Apply for your rebate with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance by November 30, 2007.
You Do Not Qualify For A Rebate If You Are A Renter, Business or a Non-Primary Resident Owner!
HOW DO I RECEIVE AN APPLICATION FOR THE REBATE PROGRAM?
You will receive a letter about the 2007 Middle Class STAR Rebate Program from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, which will provide you with details on how to apply.
These letters will be mailed beginning the week of September 24, 2007 for all of Suffolk County.
The deadline to apply for your rebate is November 30, 2007. You can apply in one of two ways:
You can apply on line for your rebate check at www.nystax.gov/star/2007 it is free, fast and secure. You will receive an online confirmation as proof that the New York State DTF received your application timely. This is the quickest way to receive your rebate check.
OR
If you can’t apply online, use the paper application, form DTF-179, which will be included with the letter provided by the New York State DTF. Complete all of the information and mail it to the DTF at the address provided on the form.
IF YOU RECEIVE ENHANCED STAR, NO APPLICATION IS NECESSARY.
WHAT INFORMATION DO I NEED TO APPLY FOR THE REBATE CHECK?
The application requires only a few simple facts for completion:
You will need the STAR code for your property, which is included with the letter you receive from the New York State DTF. The STAR code is a six-character code, assigned by the DTF. This code will make it easy for you to identify your property when you apply for your rebate. Simply transfer the STAR code to your online application. If you are using the paper application, the STAR code is already pre-printed on the form that the DTF mailed to you.
You will need the names and social security numbers of all resident property owners and their spouses.
You will need to verify that each resident property owner and their spouse filed a New York State income tax return for 2005.
If any resident property owner or their spouse was not a NYS resident in 2005 and was not required to file a 2005 New York State income tax return, you will need the front page of his/her 2005 Federal income tax return.
Please Note: If you receive more than one notification letter and pre-printed application, please review the information on each application. You should only apply for a rebate for a home that you owned on the date provided on the pre-printed application and that was your primary residence.
WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY REBATE CHECK?
Applications will be processed as they are received. Rebate checks will be issued in the names (up to three) of those listed as the resident property owners on the application. The DTF will mail rebate checks to the mailing address provided on the application.
Homeowners 65-years or older who get the Enhanced STAR exemption will receive their checks automatically beginning this summer.

The check will be in the previous owner's name b/c STAR applies towards the year prior (not the current year). Next year, the check will be in your name...

Re: Has anyone gotten the STAR letter yet in Suffolk?
SO I just lose this year right? The previous owners did not have star on the house, although they applied while we were in the process of buying to try and see if it would kick in next year for us. I sold my other house in Feb. 07. I did have Star in that house, but I would not recieve anything right. Man, I am so confused, I guess I should not worry about anything til next year. BUt I wonder if I miss next year also, since we have not applied for Star in our name yet. GRR

I think you will recieve the check from your old house. But not for your new house unless you applied for STAR in March 1, 2007

No if you go on the website, you can find out how much you will get for your location.
It looks like she just looked up the info for her district.

Re: Has anyone gotten the STAR letter yet in Suffolk?
It looks like the rebate we are due soon is for the 2006 STAR and is being paid to us automatically. After this rebate, we will have to apply for the rebate for 2007 to be paid next year.
From the website....
IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY A BASIC *STAR* ENROLLEE, YOU MUST FILE AN APPLICATION TO RECEIVE YOUR 2007 REBATE! The deadline for applying is November 30, 2007.

I helped ILs do it, it takes like 2 minutes online, all you need is the letter and your SS #.
