Has anyone had an amnio done due to age?
My Dr is suggesting I have an amnio done because i'll be 35 on friday. I'm not sure what to do. I was given the # for a genetic counselor but haven't called yet.

Re: Has anyone had an amnio done due to age?
I will be 35 when I deliver and my OB gave me the choice of what I wanted to do. They can't *make you* get an amnio.
I waited for all my beginning tests to come back OK 1st. If any of those tests came back questionable I would have moved forward in considering an amnio.

I am 34 will be a couple months shy of 35 when i give birth if my 12 week and 16 week blood work would have come back not so favorable they would have sent me for an amnio...but other than that no amino was recommended

Re: Has anyone had an amnio done due to age?
it looks like you are around the time for an ultrascreen - are you having that done? I would wait for any decision on an amnio after that screening is done.
All of my tests came back fine so I opted not to do the amnio and my dr. fully supported me on that.
If results were questionable - then I would have considered it. I personally would not due an amnio based only on my age.........

Re: Has anyone had an amnio done due to age?
IMO, I would not do it just because of age. I'm 38 (was 37 when pregnant) and if my quad triple screen and Level II had not come back questionable, I would not have had an Amnio done. My Dr. also did not push us or recommend I have it done solely based on my age.
It's a personal choice however.

I don't want to do it but wasn't sure if it was something that I should do. It was never even mentioned with my 1st pregnancy and was kinda shocked when it was mentioned for a 2nd time today.

Re: Has anyone had an amnio done due to age?
My Dr. had me do the ultrascreen and we discussed that if the results had been questionable we may have gone with an amnio and/or the CVS test. Because they came out very good, he never mentioned it again. I am 36.

Ok...so it seems most people only due it if necessary....which is what I thought. I don't know why she is pushing it so much.

First of all, Happy Birthday tomorrow! It's my birthday tomorrow also and I will be 35 as well!!
I had an amnio last year when I was preggo with DD#1 and I had one again this year for DD#2. Last year I wanted to get the test but since my Ultrascreen was normal I couldn't get one. My Level 2 had an abnormality so I was offered to get the amnio, though it was late (about 22 weeks). This time around I wanted the amnio again and I was given no problems since I will be 35 when I deliver. I had it at 17ish weeks. If you don't feel comfortable getting it done, then don't. Personally, I could not stand all of the bloodtests that only gave me a ratio. I want real answers, not what my chances are!! I felt very secure after having the amnio both times. FM me if you have any questions!

Re: Has anyone had an amnio done due to age?
I'm 41 and I declined it. We met with the genetic counselor to get the results of the 12 week/nuchal.
All other testing was fine (I did the 16 week genetic scan, level II and the quad screen as well).
PS: My daugther came out just fine!!

Re: Has anyone had an amnio done due to age?
I had one when I was PG with Abby at 17 weeks when I was 37. They did not suggest it, they offered it. It is very possible that some offices are asked/encouraged to offer it to all patients over 35 since the chances of chromosomal issues as well as other types of problems detected by amniocentesis increase. I also wouldn't be surprised if malpractice insurance dictates what doctors offer people. I would almost bet there have been scenarios in which people have sued their OB's because they didn't offer the test and something bad may have happened. It is a crazy world we live in, but that kind of thing happens.

Re: Has anyone had an amnio done due to age?
Thanks guys!! It's something I have never even considered doing...especially since my results are all coming back good. Then again I think that if there was something wrong I would want to know ahead of time to prepare myself and research. Ugh...I hate that they asked again...like I said it didn't even cross my mind to do it before today.

I did this. I was 35 when #2 was born and chose to have an amnio.
