My DD's daycare classes used to have it all year long. The worst outbreak being in November. It's not just a summer thing

Ugh, ds just got over it and now we're booked to go to sesame place next week. Guess we'll be dealing with it again.

We go every summer and never caught it there.
Personally I haven't heard of any cases lately.

Not yet. DD has avoided it 7 times, so I'm positive at some point we will be hit with the mother of all coxsackie viruses.

Gross. I asked my SIL (who has a million kids) about it and she said "you know those all you can eat buffets in vegas where you want to simultaneously shower and puke right after you leave? Sesame Place is like that. But with water. And for kids."

Yes I remember that. I really don't think it's seasonal to be honest.
But what's really gross is that chlorine in a pool doesn't kill it? These water park places are so highly chlorinated.
What the heck is it? the cockroach of viruses?

You would think so! We didn't get it from Sesame Place, but my DD got it from daycare. Both my DH and I got it from our DD, but luckily we didn't have the sores and while DD did have the sores, they weren't in her mouth/throat and they didn't seem to bother her really. Ugh, but we were all miserable- scary high fevers, body aches, general crappiness. That and the flu I absolutely dread!

I read the virus can be shed in the the child's stool for a couple weeks after they get better from it, so I'm thinking it's from kids going in the pool with poopy swim diapers and some of it getting in the water?

A properly chlorinated pool is technically supposed to kill it.

Interesting. I know at Kalahari the fumes of chlorine are so strong that they burn my eyes and throat. So I would imagine that's properly chlorinated. Never been to Sesame though.

Re: Has anyone heard of any cases of Coxsackie yet?
I read that coxsackie is a tough one to kill... even with chlorine.
Our town pool had an outbreak on opening day last year (it only takes one kid). They check chlorine levels 4 times a day.
But yes, I thought sesame place was really bad when I went years ago. We actually left early (not just because of pool).
