Has anyone left Corp America and went into teaching college?
I have been in corporate america for almost 20 years and was thinking of making a switch and getting my masters degree in teaching and becoming a college professor.
However, i have no idea where to start! Anyone have any advice?

Do you want to get a PhD in education?
I think most college professors have PhDs and do research if they are on that track. Others with experience are adjunct professors but not sure if they do it fulltime.
My friend left corp and did the NYC teaching fellows but thats not teaching college students which is totally different.
I would look at local schools websites to see what is required to get into a program and what programs they offer.

I was thinking of being more of an adjunct professor, especially as I get my feet wet.

I would network with faculty in Business programs. What is your field?
I think you prob need the Masters first to be adjunct though

Thank you for the info! I'll look into NYC teaching fellows as well and possibly the HS in LI. I remember I took some college classes related to Business when I was in HS, I LOVED them. But I have no idea if that is the norm for districts to offer that and/or if those type of programs have been cut due to budgets.

I would see if you could get your foot in the door now while keeping your current job. Just know being an adjunct pays about 1500 to 3000 per class for the entire semester. Many schools limit the number of courses you can teach. It is compete and a personality competition at many local schools. I would try to network your way into teaching one class. A non tenured professor track job on li is incredibly competitive and starting salary without a PhD is not high. 45-60k depending on the field.

Jobs in academia are very, very hard to come by, even with a PhD. Lots of schools are eliminating tenure track professors and relying on adjuncts who do not make very much at all.

Yes, this was true for my DH who was briefly on the market about 7 or 8 years ago even. This is a man who has a JD, an LL.M from NYU, 4 published law review articles, outstanding references, adjunct experience, etc etc. He would never have found a job in New York.
He is a part time adjunct since 2005 and teaches Legal History and Constitutional Law. As mentioned above, the pay is only slightly higher than that range...after 10 years. He also feels adjuncts are really persona non grata at the college, not very well-respected. He does it bc he loves teaching and he loves the law, but he can't quit his day job
I'm a hs teacher (well WAS...I'm home now) and I absolutely loved that!

I was an adjunct in a masters program. The pay is AWFUL !!!!! Unless you are a PhD or EdD whose being published and teaching as an Associate or higher, it's not a salary you can live off of.

Re: Has anyone left Corp America and went into teaching college?
thanks for all the feedback!! based on it, I think I might just find another path..
I need to find a new job that is going to work with having a family and not take me away from my kids 60 hours a week like it is now. I need to find a balance in my life with work...Im so frustrated
this turned into more of a vent than a thank you. sorry
