Has anyone read Dennis Leary's new book? (Regarding Autism)
The reason I ask is I read a few articles on it, and I am beyond shock with what I read on about the chapter about Autism, but I also read another article where he says he is being misunderstood and if anyone reads the whole book they would get it
So I wanted to hear form someone who has read the autism chapter in the full context of the book.
I don't want to jump to conclusions but its hard not to with what he wrote. I find it offensive.
Here are two articles, one which quotes the book the other is Leary defending what he wrote.
Oops posted the same link twice- fixed now

Totally off topic, but the last paragraph of your first link is:
So, f--- you, Denis Leary. The fifth season of Rescue Me starts in Spring 2009.
On topic... I haven't read the entire book. Dennis Leary has never exactly been PC, though, so I cannot say what little I've read shocks me coming from him.

No, but from the article that you posted, I would NOT give him the time or day in wanting to read his book. People who think that autistic children who diagnosed becuase "he" thinks they are lazy is an IGNORANT SOB!!!! Does he think that my son was given a diagnosis of PDD at 18 months because he is lazy???

Re: Has anyone read Dennis Leary's new book? (Regarding Autism)
I am going to play devil's advocate based on the same information everyone else has...
A long time ago, when ADHD became the hot diagnosis, all these adults jumped on the bandwagon and said, So THATS why I can't focus, pay attention, etc... and there was this HUGE mass of adult-ADD diagnoses that cropped up all of a sudden. I still hear undiagnosed adults blame their ADD for one thing or another, when, really, its not ADD. They are distracted and unorganized and it has nothing to do with anything else.
THAT being said, adults are *legitimately* for the first time in their lives being diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. The diagnosis simply didn't exist when they were chidren, and these poor people were undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. The confusing thing about Asperger's Syndrome is that most adults with this diability DO come across as lazy, obnoxious, socially inept, and "nerdy" - this is true to the diagnosis, and only someone who is aware of the disability may recognize that.
Maybe Leary is talking about people who look at this diagnosis and then say, "Hey - maybe thats what I have..." when really, they may not, but want to blame something for things that didn't work out for them in their lives due to their lack of ambition, energy, whatever.
My cousin does this to me all the time. She keeps hounding me, asking me if I think she has ADD or Asperger's Syndrome because she can't get anything done. The truth is, she has neither. She expects other people to take care of her, but she is always looking for excuses to not to take care of herself.
I wouldn't use her as an example for a group of people like this, but Leary is a controvertial comedian. They say stupid things all the time....
