Has anyone read the book Room? (Parenting related)
I'm almost done with it - so no spoilers please!!!
OMG - this book has had me sobbing. It is a little disturbing, but oh my god... It is so good!!! I can't put it down!!!
It's basically about a woman who was kidnapped when she was 19 by one of those guys who keeps her hostage in a shed for 7 years, set up as a one bedroom apartment. She gets pregnant by him and raises a little boy for 5 years in the room. The narration is done by the 5 yr old....
You just fall in love with the little boy

I read it too, an interesting read especially if you know how hard it is to take care of kids under normal circumstances.

I read it a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it! It was one of the best books that I have read in a long time. The little boy is an incredible character and the mother is one of the strongest characters that I have read in a book in a long time, not to mention an incredible mother!

That's what made me cry the most - their relationship was so real and beautiful!!!
He reminded me so much of Cailen....

i agree with this so much...i was wondering what i would do in a ROOM with my toddler and it was no where near the nice way she made it

From an educator's standpoint, what floored me was how well she worked on language, socialization, physical fitness, creativity, imagination, reading, math, etc - this mom did so much in that room to make him such a well rounded child. She did not miss one area of his development, despite the limited resources!

That is the thing that amazed me. She taught him so many things about the world and educational things just by simple living. they had a schedule and days to do things and he had limited TV time--which i LOVED

Re: Has anyone read the book Room? (Parenting related)
When you finish, I started a thread on Storyboard a while back when I read it.
That book is AWESOME!
I am AMAZED at that mother and I was generally amazed at the author for thinking everything through the way she did, especially everything that happened after he got out of the room. I love a seriously detail-oriented author.
I understand why someone said the ending was so-so, but to my mind it makes sense so I kind of disagree.. I won't say anything else but this may have been discussed on my thread - it's a few months old so I don't remember exactly.

Yeah I was the one who said the ending was so-so. I guess there wasn't any way to top the middle really...but at one point I thought it dragged on. I did love the details in the story though, especially how they considered everything (won't say too much but the masks, etc)

I just finished reading it last night. Once I got to the middle, I could NOT put it down! It was a quick, easy read but really, so, so good.
I don't think it's a book that's hard to read in terms of being able to "handle" it. Being that it's from the perspective of the 5 year old, it tends to focus on the more innocent side of things (granted, your head fills in all the blanks).
As for the ending, I agree it wasn't the BEST, but I don't know how else it really could have gone. I can't really say what else I think about it w/o including spoilers.
Overall, I also highly recommend the book!
