has anyone run a 5k or a 10k?
I want to run either a 5k or a 10k. Right now I can do 4 miles. Do you think by May I can do the full 10K?
For those of you that have done this before, what type of training schedule did you follow? Did you follow any?
Thanks!

I have done both. I would recommend a 5K first just so you get a feel for racing. I didn't follow any specific training plan for those distances. Really just my own training--some speed work.

I definitely think you can to the LI 10K in May....
here's a good training schedule
I would test out a 5K before since you have time...there is usually one a week somewhere around LI...once March comes, there will be even more.

I completely agree with Erica. Definitely try out a 5k first and then you will love doing races so much you will be doing a 10K before you know it. You have plenty of time to train for one and you will definatley we able to do it by May!

Since you already have a base of 4 miles, I think you can run a 10k next month! I ran my first 10k when the longest I had ever run was 5 miles!
Good luck and enjoy the race

Oh yeah I bet you can do it! You can probably do it sooner!
how many times a week do you run?
I would just add .25-.5 a mile every week until the race (like starting in March).

I totally agree as well. I ran a few 5K's before running my first 10K last year. Before I started training for the 10K, I usually ran an average of 4 miles each time as well. Good luck!

Re: has anyone run a 5k or a 10k?
Thanks everyone for your help and support!
Jenna- I aim for 4-5 times a week. (I dont run 4 miles every day though).
This week I did
Monday- 4.5 miles Tuesday- 2.5 miles / strength training Wednesday - 2.5 miles Thursday - off Friday - 3.5 miles
I plan on attempting 5 miles today! For the 2.5 and 3.5 miles I can do a 10 minute mile. However, once I increase the time it takes me closer to 12-14 minutes. So I want to work on building up my endurance so I can run faster AND longer. I'm alternating between longer slower runs, and quicker shorter runs.

Re: has anyone run a 5k or a 10k?
I think your should deff. be able to do a 10k by then. I've done both and I really only treain by running 4-5x's a wk 1 long run (60mins) and the rest (35-45mins per run) It's worked for me so far
