they hadnt actually "met" he was there 2 years before her and she was there in 2006. she left a letter in the mailbox for the next owner, but instead he was the one getting them and they kept corresponding through the letters.

Turns out though later on in the movie she had actually met him in 2004,

First being she writes him a letter saying how she left something something in 2004 while waiting for train while with her dad(it was a book) so he goes there on that date, and he sees her from afar and gets the book.

This ended up having him run into a man she was dating and he invites him to a party where they actually meet and kiss.

Its kinda chance meeting, but at the same time it was kind of planned since the letters go back in time. This is my take on it.
