Has anyone seen the movie "School Ties"?

It stars Matt Damon, Brendan Fraser and Ben Affleck, it's from the early 90's. this movie helped launch the careers of these stars. it was on cable last night and I've seen it many times, but DH had not.

for those who didn't see it, it's about a middle class Jewish boy (Bredan Fraser) in the 1950's who attends a preparatory school for privileged Christian kids in New England. he feels forced to hide his Jewish background b/c of their bigotry. it is a very thought provoking film and at the end of the movie, my DH was SO ANGRY. DH is Catholic and I'm Jewish. he was horrified by how the Jewish kid was treated once they found out. he said to me that he would always protect me from scum of the earth like them, even though thankfully things have changed since the 50's! my DH said it really made him think about how he doesn't know what it is like to be hated for who he was born to. interesting stuff...

It is an incredible movie & their acting was phenomenal. Very difficult to watch at times though. You want to punch the screen.

I have seen this movie a hundred times yet for some reason I can't place Ben Affleck in it, but he's on the cover.
Who was his character??

Loved that movie. I would have to see it again to remember all that. I remembering seeing it in college and talking about it at length with friends.

Re: Has anyone seen the movie "School Ties"?

I love that movie.

It's funny how easy we forget about this kind of discrimination. My father told me that when he graduated from law school (top of his class at Harvard law), he couldn't get a job because of his last name (very jewish sounding). He had to work at some crap firm for years and years until things changed a little.

His friend, who had a christain sounding name, got a job at a top ten law firm in NYC, and was fired on-site when they discovered he was actually jewish! Chat Icon

I don't know if the world we live in now is better or worse. I almost prefer the discrimination that's obvious and totally out there, because it's easier to combat. These days it's unspoken and much more subtle, and more difficult to attack head on.

From what my parents tell me, it was pretty bad, and they lived in NY - I can't imagine what is was like in other states! But, now, not so much - I think a lot depends on where you live. I've definitely had more of a culture shock here in Philadelphia, especially in particular areas. People have actually told me to my face "wow, you're much nicer than I thought you would be for a jew" Chat Icon Chat Icon

There was a really interesting program on PBS a few weeks ago about the resurgance of anti-semitism in the U.S. and Europe, stemming from hostile relations between Israel and many of the muslim countries. It was definitely interesting...

Well only 10 years ago, someone in Lousianna asked to see my horns when they heard I was Jewish. Chat Icon

There is so much ignorance or prejudice out there that we have no clue about. I have a Jewish friend from Michigan. She knows there are still tons of KKK people around there- and we are talking wealthy suburbs of Detroit.

My SIL lives in Albama- and she is Israeli. She has met young teenagers who walk into her store HATING Jews, even though they never met one. One girl carved a swatsticka into her arm with a knife when she 11 years old Chat Icon My SIL told her that she was Jewish and the girl was so ashamed. She said she never met a Jew before.
