Has anyone studied Buddhism? I have a question about Quan Yin
I read a small blurb about her, and I am thinking this might become my tattoo for my kids in some way.
If anyone knows about her, can you share what you know?
Also, is it disrespectful to those who practice to place this type of icon in a tattoo?
Thanks!

I don't know - but I did just start taking meditation classes at a buddhist center. If you can't get the answer you need here please FM me and I will refer you to the center - maybe they will know.

Re: Has anyone studied Buddhism? I have a question about Quan Yin
Awesome thanks. I am pretty out about showing my tattoos and I definitely do not want to offend.
So far I got that it is one of the few goddesses that is adored and not feared, so that sounds good, right?

Re: Has anyone studied Buddhism? I have a question about Quan Yin
Well the Quan Yin also known as the Kwan Yin, is the Chinese goddess of Mercy. She is a very special goddess who did not believe in violence, protects the people, hears prayer of the sick, elderly, etc. and children.
In Chinese culture she is one of the most respected and I think only female goddess. You can find her in alot of chinese temples in Chinatown. If you do a yahoo search on her, you'll find lots of history and info with pictures. Hope this helps!
As for tattoos...I don't think it would be disrespectful....never heard of that.

What a nice idea - the deity is known as a protectress of children - so I it is a nice idea to honor your babies!
I think the idea of a tattoo would be fine - it may be offensive to some in the same manner that a tattoo of the Holy Virgin Mother might get some people offended. But I don't think the majority of those with an Eastern faith would be 'offended'. They might not 'get it' but offended probably wouldn't enter in.

ILs are very catholic & they HATE that DH has a St Anthony tattoo. I definitely would not want to offend someone's beliefs in that way. I do not know how that culture views tattoos, so I was not sure about if it would offend.
I like the story, and the more I find the more I think this will be the tattoo I get for my kids. DH is is jealous & asked if he could get it too

Now I need to find someone who does sumi-e so I can get the names and the background in the style I want... I have a lot of time since I am only 13w PG with my 2nd.
Thanks for the responses!

Re: Has anyone studied Buddhism? I have a question about Quan Yin
I have a Quan Yin figurine hanging from my window with a crystal as well as a fairly large statue of her in my foyer. She is the Goddess of Mercy, as another poster said, and protector of children. I think she would make a beautiful tattoo.

No problem...you have plenty of time to choose. Try to do a search for tattoo places in the city (unless you have someone already) who's reputable and can do an awesome job. You def. wouldn't want someone to mess this one up!

I have a good tattoo artist (several actually as I have a few pieces) but a very good friend in LA has an amazing artist that did his Karp piece and it looks of traditional asian art.... I have to see. Plus any excuse to go to CA works for me

Re: Has anyone studied Buddhism? I have a question about Quan Yin
Someone described Kwan Yin very well - we have a statue of her in our home - she is from Chinese culture...
I study buddhism.... Technically, you aren't supposed to "wear" an image of Buddha on anything that can be destroyed- on clothing, and I guess that would also be your body, however, I can't imagine anyone seeing it as offesnive - I think its a beautiful idea!!!

So I guess wearing an image of Quan Yin is OK then, b/c she is not the Buddha?
