Has anyone talked to their Ped about thumb sucking?
DD is 20 months and a CHRONIC thumb sucker.. her thumb is in her mouth a good 50-60% of her waking hours. Having been a thumb-sucker until college (seriously), I'm not anti-thumb sucking but want to know how much is too much? Yesterday I started telling her to take it out when she's trying to talk to me, and other times when we're playing and I know she isn't tired, stressed, etc.
This isn't urgent enough for me to call the Ped and I'll bring it up in Sept at her 2yr well visit but just wondering what other Peds say about it.

Re: Has anyone talked to their Ped about thumb sucking?
DS1 is a paci addict. He'll be 3 and now it's for nights only, but I still need to get rid of it. Already got a lecture from his Dentist
My 10 month old is a thumb sucker big time. Right now it's nice b/c he always has it to soothe himself. Although I see him down the road sucking his thumb for a while. Haven't talked to the Ped yet b/c he's young, but my dad said my brother was and taught him around 2-3 to tuck his thumb in and hold it to his mouth. THis way he gets the comfort of having his hand by him (along with his blankie) and it doesn't ruin his teeth or anything. Actually worked and he stopped A friend of mine put that nasty stuff on his thumb to get him to stop and didn't work.

Re: Has anyone talked to their Ped about thumb sucking?
DS just stopped sucking his thumb all on his own at 26 months. I am still schocked. The kid pretty much had a hand growing out of his mouth from birth. We tried everything, like bandaids on the fingers, tight gloves at night, that groos tasting gel. Once he was around 18-20 months, we started to tell him to remove his thumb from his mouth or we'd take a toy away or turn his tv show off. It got to the point where, all we would have to do was look at him & say "thumb" & he knew he better take it out of his mouth. He doesn't even miss it now.
His Ped wanted him to stop sucking at 1 year but it was impossible at that age. I could tell he still needed it to soothe. I took him to a Ped Dentist at 18 months because his teeth were starting to get pushed out from his thumb & he told us not to worry about it until DS was 3 years old.

Re: Has anyone talked to their Ped about thumb sucking?
My DD has been sucking her thumb since before she was born. Luckily, she ONLY does it when she's tired. It's a napping/sleeping thing. She's 3.5 now and my ped always says that she'll grow out of it when she's ready. He also mentioned once she is a little older we could try some methods like rewards systems and the icky taste on the thumb but at her age now he felt like she wouldn't get it and it would only upset her. For now I'm not sweating it too much but we'll see as she gets older. I am actually more concerned about her teeth than anything. So far they are okay but that could change.

Re: Has anyone talked to their Ped about thumb sucking?
My DS will be 4 in July and has sucked his thumb since infancy. He does it when he's tired. I brought it up at his 3 yo well visit and she was not concerned. She said, if he's still doing it going in to kindergarten, then we'll talk. The dentist isn't concerned either. He bascially said, he's probably going to need braces anyway. DS also has a cross bite, which he would probably need a palet extender for anyway, so that would correct it well before braces were needed.
