Has anyone used Ancestry.com?

Did you have good results? Is it worth the $150/year?

Re: Has anyone used Ancestry.com?

It really depends on how often you're going to use it. If you're serious about doing some research, it can be worth it since there really isn't any other comparable on-line source (yet) for so many resources. IMO, you're paying for convenience - having all those records in one place, available on your computer any time you want.

If you want to try it out, call a few local libraries - some libraries have a subscription that you can go there and use. It may not be the "full" version you would get for the $150, but you can get a feel for the site, the info they offer, and whether or not you think you'd use it enough to want to pay. Also, sometimes they do 1 month free trial offers, so you could call ancestry directly and see if anything's available like that.

I just used it for the free 2 week trial. I got some info but I didn't think it was worth it to keep the account going.

I was going to suggest the library as well.

If you are suffolk, you can go to suffolk eresources and they have a subscription to World Vital Records.

Nassau might have something similar

Re: Has anyone used Ancestry.com?

you can use the message boards for free... i posted years ago and I still get emails 1-2 times a year when someone responds to it.

at the time when i was using it there were still a lot that I could use with out paying, but this may have changed now

Re: Has anyone used Ancestry.com?

my Dad has done a lot of work on our family tree and I think he got the most of what he needed in the first week or so. There are a lot of other sites and resources to try
