Has anyone volunteered to teach religion classes?

I'd like to find a regular way to volunteer. I'm no religion expert but I'm curious what kind of commitment is required.

Re: Has anyone volunteered to teach religion classes?

I didn't teach ccd, because my kids aren't old enough yet. But I helped teach Sunday school. I needed to get a background check and full clearances before starting. In the beginning I was with 2 other people and they showed me how things were done, it was usually a prayer to start, a bible story, an art project or garden project to reinforce the bible story, if it was nice out we would go on the playground for a bit, then we would end in prayer with a snack that they could start and bring home with them. My kids absolutely loved it, I would volunteer 2x a month (every other Sunday) and other times when nobody was available, but I tried to limit it to 2x a month at most so that I could still attend mass every other week.

We have moved since and haven't found a church that fits us, and I miss it so much. Good luck!

in my parish, the commitment is once a week for an hour following the school calendar. there are also a handful of grade level Masses that you attend during the year. Usually, grade levels that involve a Sacrament (like Grade 2 and Grade 7 or 8) may have additional requirements. they assign you a grade level and a class. there is training before hand and all materials are provided for you. most parishes have a real need for catechists, so I am sure they would be so happy to have you!

the diocese of RVC does require a background check and completion of their Virtus program (basically info. on child abuse, etc.) to volunteer.

ETA: I am sure there are opportunities to volunteer for early childhood and Pre-school programs, "Sunday" school, etc. that would vary by parish. the above is for grade-level classes and those general requirements are set by the diocese for students Grades 1-8.

I teach it for one hour a week. I started last year any my daughter is doing her first Communion this year. We attend a training in September. They give me the materials and I usually align a hands on activity or craft with the lesson. There is so much on Pinterest. It runs from September to April.
As a PP stated, I had to get a background check and I attended a Virtues training that was a couple of hours.
I love doing it! It is only one hour a week and I have gotten really attached to my second graders!

My brother did it for his parish--once. A kid actually BIT him, and he decided that that was enough!
