It's the wave of the future. Just don't mouse over it and it's fine.
I would imagine this is a better way of generating revenue than asking people for donations or making you pay to register.
Web hosting is quite expensive, especially for a site this large. It's probably on a dedicated server/IP address which is 
If we don't like the advertising, we can always inquire about giving Ron & Co. money to help run the site. Or accept that it costs a lot of money.
It's really not that bad once you get used to it. I believe Yahoo does it too in emails and that not mousing over it is the best way to avoid the pop up window.
