Has this happened to anyone - Graco snugride car seat completely tipped over!!!
I was driving and the car seat completely tipped to the right side so DS was flat on the side of the seat! Thank god I wasn't on a parkway or anything! Now I can't get the base to stay straight without tipping! Has this ever happened to anyone?

I didn't have the snugride but it sounds as if the base wasn't installed properly and definitly not tight enough.

I don't understand how the base can tip if it is installed properly?

That def not a good thing. Through 2 girls in that seat never had that problem.
Do you have a hump in the middle of the car that the base isn't sitting flat or something? If so i'd def put it on the passenger side in the back or tighten those straps alot. It should onlyy wiggle a MAX of 1 inch left or right.
Omgoodness thank god DC was okay!
Def call graco too if you have any questions or problems installing it

Re: Has this happened to anyone - Graco snugride car seat completely tipped over!!!
This almost happened to us last week. DH was driving and while getting on the GW bridge, the car seat tipped almost all hte way over. I saw what was happened and righted it. As soon as we were in NJ, we stopped and DH tightened the straps on the base. I think the base had gotten too loose. We hadn't checked it in some time.

Thats what I was thinking. When we first put ours in just using the seat belt I felt it was too loose. Then DH realized he should have used the latch hooks and now that thing is solid!
Check to make sure its installed properly. Maybe take it to get professionally checked!

This is what must have happened. I have to say it was def. installed properly b/c we had it inspected but it gets loose ALOT and we have had to tighten it multiple times...

If your back seat is contoured it's a bit harder to install properly.
DH installed ours but he's "mechanically challenged" When we called the SCPD about inspecting it they sent an officer to the house. She was fantastic and told us that certain officers go through a 40 hour training session on how to properly install and inspect car seats. She spent at least a half hour installing and leveling them.
In order to balance out the seat, and counter the contoured part, she wedged part of a "noodle" (the kind kids use in the pool) under the side of the car seat that didn't have the contour. She said they keep them at the precinct for that purpose.

Yes, that happened to me and I almost had a heart attack! Like you, I was on a side street. My older DD said, "Look! Abby layin' down!" I turned around and OMG! It wasn't totally on its side, but close. The problem was that it wasn't tightened properly. We fixed it and never had the problem again.

Re: Has this happened to anyone - Graco snugride car seat completely tipped over!!!
It happened to me too! DD was only 3 months old - I panicked!! And we had the seat installed by the professionally trained person at the hospital.
But I discovered that without constant tightening, the base wiggles loose after a while...
I make sure to tighten / check once a week now...and I am looking forward to DD getting into the bigger car seat (though not to her getting bigger necessarily ) since I think it will be more secure...
I've travelled with DD and secured her car seat without the base and honestly sometimes I think that is more secure!!

You have to tighten the base. Also there should be a locking clip that you can use to hold the seatbelt at that tightness so it wont loosen again. The locking clip is very important especially if you are using a sholder/lap belt combo

What is the locking clip? I didn't install the base - my DH did so he may already know this but, I want to point it out just in case - is it on the car seat? TIA PS. your girls in your avatar are BEAUTIFUL!

The locking clip should def be used if you use a seatbelt to restrain the carseat base or carseat itself to the seat. It's located underneath on the bottom of the carseat towards the front. it's metal.
If you use latch you don't have to locking clip.
Def check the manual too

we had the same done - they also used the noodle - it is really secure.

Re: Has this happened to anyone - Graco snugride car seat completely tipped over!!!
Here's instructions from gracobaby.com Question: How can I tell if my car seat is installed tightly enough? Answer: For a rear facing seat, grip the top edge and try to push it downward. The back of the safety seat should stay firmly in place at the same angle. It is normal if the seat can be flipped toward the rear of the car. For a forward facing seat with a harness, grip the top edge of the seat and try to tilt it forward and sideways. If it moves more than 1 inch toward the front of the car or tips to the side, re-adjust using the locking clip or try another seating position. Back to Questions Question: How do I use a locking clip with a car seat? Answer: Bring the seat belt across the car seat and buckle as usual. Tighten the seat belt as much as possible. Firmly hold the shoulder and lap portions of the seat belt together just behind the sliding latchplate and unbuckle the seat belt. Still holding the seat belts together, weave the locking clip over both layers of seat belt about 1/2" from the sliding latchplate. When you are done, you will see four metal "legs" inlaid with the seat belt. Re-buckle the seat belt; it should still fit tightly. Test for a secure installation by tugging hard on the lap portion of the seat belt and by forcing the car seat from side to side and back and forth. If the lap seat belt loosens, repeat these steps or install the car seat elsewhere in the car. Back to Questions
