Have Toddler, Will Travel

Yes I'm doing it again. I'm flying with a toddler. This time just me (no DH to help Chat Icon) and Jake and he's got his own seat since he's now 2 years old. A few questions...

1. Is he supposed to sit in his carseat on the plane? Or can he just sit in the seat?

2. If I bring the carseat and I don't need it for the plane, do I check it at the gate like the stroller or with the baggage?

When we traveled to Italy, Alia had her own seat. They provide a special seatbelt if you have them on your lap.

We brought the stroller and we brought in the plane unless you tell them to check in with the other luggage.

If you are traveling alone I would opt to use carseat on plane. It will keep your son in one spot and also give him a comfy place to sleep. Otherwise, I would check it in with luggage so that you don't have to carry it through the airport. I have never seen a special seatbelt, but have never traveled internationally with my son.

It's much safer in the carseat, plus probably more comfortable, so I would definitely use the carseat on the plane.

With my son, we learned he did much better on the plane when he wasn't in his carseat. He is very high energy and doesn't sit still very long so on the outbound flight he was miserable in the car seat...kicking the guy in front, screaming, etc. Going back we tried it without the carseat and he was 100% better since he felt like he had some room to move and sit like a "big boy".

Just another view point to consider depending on your child's personality.

We didn't bring a car seat on the plane with my 2 year old when we went away. Gave him more room to stretch and play.

Can't answer #2 since we didn't bring a seat at all.
