Have you ever asked for a raise?
And if you found out someone (or some people) were there less time then you and were making more, would you?
I am contemplating it, but I am not a very aggressive person.

Have you ever asked for a raise?
I don't compare my salary to people depending on how long they have been with the company, I compare more on their knowledge vs my knowledge. If we were on the same team, doing the same thing, with the same schooling, I would just assume they negotiate better than I do. HOWEVER, if someone came into my company, with NO knowledge of the industry and was making more than I was, then yes...I would ask for the raise...IF I felt like I deserved more...AND depending how long I've been working there.
Sorry, there are a lot of factors that go into a decision like that.

This is tough - on one hand, this is why employers don't want you knowing what others make because there are so many variables, and usually the least of which is seniority.
I would never ask for a raise unless I felt that it was justified - some people just want more money but don't want any more responsibility, and in my job, you have to prove your worth. I asked for a raise once - and was given it - but I had a long list of proven responsibilities and tasks and goals that justified my request. You can't just be like, I've been here longer give me more money.

Re: Have you ever asked for a raise?
i am the least aggressive person in the universe. it took A LOT to get me to even consider asking for a raise.
last year, i did it. i wanted to die during the entire process.
i got a menial raise, but it i did it.
at the time, i was told there was a lot going on and i was given a "temporary" raise until the owner did a little research (two office managers has been let go in a very short window of time). now, i see that it was his excuse to not give me a real raise.
so, i'm looking for a new job.
BUT at the end of the day i do NOT regret finding the strength to ask for it. now i have the experience under my belt.
so, like the dove deodorant commercial... go in there and give them hell!!

Have you ever asked for a raise?
I have never asked for a raise because other people made more than me but if I felt like I was doing more and should earn more based on my job duties and not comparing to others then I would.
It will not look good if you go in and ask for money because you think you should make the same as someone else. All money requests should tie directly to your performance and not to someone who did a better job negotiating at the get go or that over time salary ranges jumped and people that have been there for e a longer period get left behind.....unfortunately it happens everyday in corp america.

Have you ever asked for a raise?
I did ask once for a raise because my duties almost tripled from what I was doing and became high profile. I got a small raise and a job title change and was switched over to a different bonus pool, which if done correctly would have bumped up my overall compensation to an acceptable level. Well bonuses came around and my boss (who was a male chauvinistic pig) gave me the smallest bonus I have ever seen in my industry. I literally laughed in his face when he told me and right then and there told him I was going to pursue other opportunities in the firm. Within a month a had numerous job offers (because people knew who I was and had good results) and doubled my salary and my bonus increased by 400% that year. Sometimes people are just assholes and you need to move on if you are not getting paid what you are worth. That being said, I didn't compare myself to others in my same field but stressed more on what I was doing that deserved more money.

I have asked because i earned it and deserved it. You cant go too much by what you hear about others are doing.

Re: Have you ever asked for a raise?
I haven't read the other comments, but you cannot compare what you make to what others make. That's just part of the business world.
What you can (and should) do if you think you're being underpaid is set up a meeting with your boss. Tell him/her that you're interested in getting feedback and want to set up a plan for you to get a raise/promotion in a certain timeframe. That's usually more effective - to show you want to work towards a goal.
You cannot expect to get a raise just because those around you make more.

Re: Have you ever asked for a raise?
Trust me; its stressful. But you have every right to ask for one.
I was sent in error the entire company's salaries about 6 months ago; and yes, I looked. But there was no way I was going to bring that up.
We get a raise every year; however, my reasons for asking for more is because my work load had increased; along with a few other things I have done for the company; that I felt I should be compensated and recognized for.
It was recognized; and I received what I wanted.
The worst they can say is no; but at least you asked. You never know; you might be surprised!
