Have you ever heard of giving an infant under 2 mo. cereal and fruit already?

My friends cousin just had a baby. Apparently she said he drinks about 8 oz. every 3 hours or so but continues to scream. I said I think he may have reflux and apparently her ped. concurred. The peds. recommendation was to start feeding him cereal and fruit Chat Icon I told my friend that IMO she should tell her cousin to go to a new ped. DS was a big eater and started with some reflux around 2 mo. so I added very small amounts of cereal to his bottles which worked wonders. But fruit? Before 2 mo.? i think that is crazy and she is only looking for a myriad of problems in the future.

I can understand some cereal in the bottle by not by the spoonfulls and certainly not the fruit. I wonder though what our parents did years ago?

My mom said that when we were babies (in the 70's), cereal and fruit/veggies were started very early. I can't remember exactly, but it was soon, like 2 or 3 months.

What our parents did years ago is what research says has now contributed to increased food allergies and diabetes.

My mother said the same thing when I had DS. I started feeding him cereal at 4 mo. and even that was controversial to some.

They have a family history of diverticulitis and chrons disease thats the only reason my friend is concerned that starting cereal and fruit so young could cause more problems in the long run.

Unfortunately, I've recently read some conflicting research that is saying that waiting too long before introducing certain foods can increase the risk of allergies..... Chat Icon Chat Icon (The two I posted here basically say it's neutral, but I'm going to see if I can find an article saying that waiting may not be good.)

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/healthy-baby/PR00029
To help prevent food allergies, parents were once encouraged to avoid feeding young children eggs, fish and peanut butter. Today, however, researchers say there's no convincing evidence that avoiding these foods during early childhood will help prevent food allergies. Still, it's a good idea to check with your baby's doctor or dietitian if any close relatives have a food allergy. And remember that peanut butter poses a choking hazard for babies.

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/541952
"Whereas parents and pediatricians can be in no doubt regarding the avoidance of cow's milk and dairy products as complementary foods for the primary prevention of allergic disease in at-risk infants, the same degree of confidence cannot be shared regarding the introduction of the child to a solid diet, for which no evidence- or consensus-based guidance is available," write Alessandro Fiocchi, MD, from the University of Milan Medical School in Italy, and colleagues from the Adverse Reactions to Foods Committee of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. "To compound the problem, there is no standard schedule for weaning infants who are healthy or at risk for allergy."

There is no evidence that delayed introduction of allergenic foods like egg, milk, peanut, tree nuts, or seafood beyond the first 4-6 months of life reduces the risk of food allergy and eczema. Some studies suggest that delayed introduction of foods beyond 6 months may even lead to an increased risk of food allergy, although further research is required to confirm this

There is a huge difference between waiting too long (i.e. after 6 months) and giving solids under 2 months.

i agree.

plus, most babies are not able to eat from the spoon that young. they need to have lost the "tongue-thrust" reflex and be able to push food to the roof of their mouth and swallow.

i would definitely suggest she find a new ped.

unfortunately i saw this quite a bit when rotating in pediatrics... and more often than not, those infants were extremely overweight and covered in eczema Chat Icon

two months is definitely WAY too early to be giving your child that stuff.

i know that this was done frequently in the past - MIL recently showed me the written recs from DH's ped at his two week appt, which said to start cereals at THREE WEEKS! Chat Icon it's not surprising that DH had terrible eczema and allergies.

i know that putting some cereal in bottles is frequently done if your child has reflux... but that's really the only case, when the benefits of the cereal outweigh the risks of it. giving cereal that young needs to be done judiciously...
