Have you ever made caramel apples?
I am a pretty good baker and make chocolate and what not all the time. Wondering if this is something I can make myself for DS's Christening favors.

Re: Have you ever made caramel apples?
My mom and grandma made them while were were growing up for Halloween - with the teenie apples you get in the bag at the store, and melted caramel squares. But I do remember them being soft - they don't harden like candy apples. Not sure if anyone has a trick for that, but just something to keep in mind while you consider packaging them!

Re: Have you ever made caramel apples?
I love making them. they are so easy.
buy the Kraft caramels (or whichever brand) and sticks..like popsicle sticks.
melt the caramels over low heat on the stove top.
clean and dry your apples. I like a tarter apple. like Granny Smith. I would buy a bag full rather than individual apples b/c the bag apples tend to be smaller. perfect size for a favor.
have your toppings out on plates...I like nuts. you could also do coconut, cookie crumb, sprinkles etc.
spear an apple with the stick. dip it into the hot caramel and left it out, letting the excess drip off and back into the pot. Hold it upright for a few seconds, then plop the top into the topping of your choice.
place coated topped apple on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. and make the next one.
allow to cool and caramel to "harden" though they won't get hard. they'll just set. for wrapping, I'd stick to cellophane wrappers, just make sure they've had enough time to dry and set completely or else it will get messy.
you could even opt to not wrap them but set them out for your guests in covered cake plates (so they are not just out in the air) and place candy bags on the tables if they chose to take them to go.
DELICIOUS!!!!
