Re: Have you (or anyone you know) moved from LI to Florida?
and just a quick comment on the weather - because everyone says it is so hot. We rarely see 100 degree temps in FL (well at least on the east coast) over the summer, which NY can definitely get. And wherever you go in FL is air conditioned and you are always near a pool and/or beach, so it is much more tolerable. It does get humid, but you also do adjust after being here.

I NEVER adjusted in the 4 yrs I lived there.
It's cliche to say but with FL, it's not really about the heat.......it's ALL about the humidity which is BRUTAL. The air always feels swampy and gross.
Some people have a higher tolerance for that kind of weather, I am NOT one of those people.

Yes, fireants too! You can't really live in FL without paying for monthly pest control. My in-laws have to keep their cereal and other dried foods in tupperwares because the bugs get into the boxes. And their house is spotless.
My parents friend - same thing.

Re: Have you (or anyone you know) moved from LI to Florida?
Both of my BILs, their families and my MIL live on the east coast Two of our nieces live in Ft Meyers, a bunch of my cousins, aunts, etc also live on the west coast. They all started out in NY
One BIL moved from lake worth to Wellington for better schools. They live in a nice gated community but it is not less expensive than LI COL. The house is nice but it was $$$, the property taxes are less but when you add in the common charges they are like suffolk county taxes. They have one daughter that has special needs, the school has been great for her. They had to start sending their youngest to private school last year because they couldn't deal with the High school for her. They pay a lot for that tuition. From what I understand the Wellington district is better than most FL districts. He owns a big pest control company so employment is not a problem. Their oldest is in state college and I can tell you that is significantly less expensive than SUNY My other BIL is also self employed. He loves Florida but he's been there over 20 years. His daughter grew up in ft lauderdale where her mom lives, she went to private school. I agree that the quality of life can be better depending on where you choose to live in FL. I find that the areas where the NY salary jobs are do not really work out to be much less expensive. Many of my cousins on the west coast have struggled to find jobs that were equivalent to the NY jobs. We make many trips to Florida a year to visit everyone, we would like to buy something there but I'm not excited about being there full time. I'm all in favor of people doing whatever they have to do to make a good, comfortable life for their family! Good luck on your decision!

Have you (or anyone you know) moved from LI to Florida?
My SIL, BIL, and DH's extended family moved down there years ago and love it and hate coming back to NY.

See, to me, constant heat and humidity seem like a dream come true! I thrive in NY in July. I get depressed from Sept- May So Florida weather would be ideal for my mood and psyche!

3 family members have moved down there.
1 came back 1 couple went with a transfer for work and said it was better money etc... They like it, but still struggle a bit. The third couple went and both got great jobs and love it.
I think the job market depends on your field.

thank you all for your insightful responses and advice! It has been very helpful to hear your perspectives.
DH is going down next week to look into areas to rent and talk with his employer, etc.
Youve helped ease some of my fears and brought other ideas out that I hadn't thought about. Thanks!!

We moved to FL in May 2014 with our 2 very young children. We have no family here and didn't know anyone. We are LOVING it!!!! We have no regrets. Even my 4 turned 5 year old tells me how happy he is here.
My DH transferred with his employer so job market wasn't a concern for us. DH is in investment banking and with the number of companies relocating personel here, someone in a related field shouldn't have a problem. We live in St. John's county which is the #1 school district in the state. Cost of living where we live is comparable to NY and groceries are actually more expensive but I think a lot depends on where you live. We live in a new community that is mostly upper-middle class surrounded by really upper-middle class areas so that's why COL is what it is. Real estate was less than in NY but you won't find anything for $200K, most homes start in the mid-300's and go up steadily from there.
DH's commute went from 1hr+ each way to 15 minutes! We see him in the mornings before school and he's home by 6:15 even on a late day bc the commute is so short. Our quality of life is much improved. We see him more, he's happier. Our son is happier bc he's outside every day playing. Our community has lots of events and bc most people have relocated from elsewhere, people tend to be friendly and welcoming.
Yes, it does get really hot but it's for about 2.5 months. That's like winter in NY. But when it's hot you can at least go to the pool. We are in NE Florida so temps do cool down. Our temps now are mid-70's to low 80's. It's great! It will get cooler in January and February and lows could drop to the 40's but daytime temps hover around 60 those days.
We have no regrets. I never thought I'd say that. We'd never lived anywhere but LI/NYC and didn't know what to expect but we are so happy to be here.
A lot depends on where you are moving and why. I'd never move somewhere if my DH didn't have a job which furthered his career lined up. Also, living where we are with the school district being top in the state allayed any fears about our children's education. Having 3 seasons also helps. Bugs haven't been an issue.
That's our experience. You really ahve to look at where you'd be living, what you are looking for in terms of quality of life and what's important to you. Everyone's experience is different. GL with your decision.
ETA: We walk outside on the grass barefoot. Even my 11 month old would walk out there, he hasn't known any different.
I know this was an older topic but this was a really interesting response and I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to write it. Having grown up in LI/work in NYC/College in Boston, I only know Florida from visiting grandparents in Fort Lauderdale, and DH and I sometimes dream about the kind of life you're discussing with his commute being short, therefore he's happier, etc etc. Food for thought for sure

Re: Have you (or anyone you know) moved from LI to Florida?
I have a place in Palm Beach county and a place in Long Island. I would move permanently to FL if I was able to make the money. The job market in FL pays a lot less than Manhattan. So for now I just take long weekends. I play a lot of golf and I hate the winter, I don't think I would move back to NY if I was making enough $$$$.
I always said I could sell my house in LI which has a ton of equity, sell my current house in PBC and buy a larger house and pay cash. Right now I have a very good job in Manhattan so I stay for now.

Re: Have you (or anyone you know) moved from LI to Florida?
I've been told it's way more upscale living overall. Easier life. So, you trade cold, dirty, crowded public transportation for beautiful roads. I also feel like NY is becoming too congested/unsafe, and FL offers a nice alternative to that. Lots to consider.

This is us too. We have a vacation home in palm Beach gardens but DH couldn't make the same $$ in Florida. But we love it down there!
