Having second thought about getting my puppy spayed
I know it is for the best and I don't plan to have her make babies. But Im a little scared of the surgery. She just made 6months and Im not sure when I should get it done or even if I should get it done.
When do they usually have their first heat episode?

Re: Having second thought about getting my puppy spayed
What many pet owners do not know is that the incidence of mammary tumor development in dogs is higher yet with one in four unspayed female dogs affected. ...

Very true - and what if she got out or a male dog got in your yard? Accidents happen!
It's a totally routine surgery and so important to do for your dog's future health!

Re: Having second thought about getting my puppy spayed
I have a male dog. But we waited until he was 8 months old to get him fixed. He bounce back very quickly.
Good luck with your decision. I assure you your furbaby will not hold the surgery against you. I think we take it worse than they do. I cried when I left him at the doctor in the am.

Re: Having second thought about getting my puppy spayed
I understand how you feel. I too was hesitant b/c I didn't want to put them through the surgery.
But after much research and speaking to my vet, it really is in the dog's best interest health wise to get them spayed/neutered for a longer healthier life.
Dogs can start going into heat b/w 6mths to a year. My girl dog started at 8 mths. The thing is if you wait and she goes into heat, many vets (mine included) want them to be out of heat for at least a mth - 2 mths b/c they can bleed too much during surgery if their uterus is still engorged from the heat.
Also girl doggies can bleed a lot.I got caught b/c I waited too long. My girl doggie went into heat at 8 mths, and I then had to wait until she was about 11 mths old to get her spayed. She bled for almost one month (and she is 12 lbs) and it was quite a bit of blood. She had to wear a diaper.
My suggestion, if you trust your vet, I would get moving on it now before she has her first heat.

It's really in the best interest (healthwise) of your dog to have her spayed.
She's at the perfect age for it to be done. All the information I've read is that they should be at least 6 months old.
what has your vet said?

Trust me it was hard for me but I told myself I will NEVER forgive myself if she gets a gyn cancer later in life b/c I did not do the right thing.
Plus her heat was horrible, bleeding a long time, she was so uncomfortable, she was HUMPING my boy dog, it was bad. She was so cranky (PMS) and just seemed so unhappy.
Go for it, do it now. Don't wait. I am 100% glad I got both my dogs fixed, even though I had a hard time doing it.

Definitely get it done...my friend has two female dogs, didn't get them spayed and both have had to have emergency hysterectomies due to uterine cancer. If they had been spayed, this would not have happened.

I felt the same way when we took Daisy in, but I also remember what Sadie went through when she was in heat. It is a HORRIBLE experience and VERY painful! She cried and cried and cried. I know you're scred, but it really is bette rin the long run. In about a wk she'll be almost back to normal FM if I can help at all

Totally agree with the above posters. For her health, get her spayed.

Don't be afraid, it is routine and healthier for your dog. Katie was spayed at 6 months.

I had a similar problem. I waited to get Pyxie fixed because she was soooo little that I was afraid of the anesthesia. I had to wait until she was 10 - 11 months old to have her surgery b/c she went into heat & it lasted almost 2 months. Another side effect of this is that her "boobs" got engorged looking, and since she is nekkid, it looks like they are sagging now. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I have her checked at her 6 month visit to make sure there is no lasting effect for her becoming engorged-looking during her heat cycle. Most dogs you would never see that, and would not know to check it.

Funny you say that. My girl doggie's nipples got so enlarged, she really became engorged. We kept saying she was no longer a puppy, but a lady dog.
I too was worried that we increased her risk of breast cancer from that ONE heat. About a year later, they have returned to normal puppy size.

Re: Having second thought about getting my puppy spayed
Besides the health issues you should have it done because there are enough unwanted animals in this world already. Sometimes you don't 'plan' on them making babies..
