Having trouble finding a German Shepherd to rescue. Long.
I am really bummed, so I am venting!
I have been applying to German Shepherd rescues all over NY and NJ...I keep missing out on them. I ALMOST had one about 3 weeks ago - we drove all the way to Port Chester to meet the dog (1.5 hours each way). We brought Zoey who was recovering from ACL surgery. He was a great dog...they "padded his resume" a little - they said he was great on a leash - he's not, he's ok, and he needs some manners. But I'm ok with all of that, I trained Schultz, we went to dog school, I had no problem to put the effort into him. Let me preface this with that before I drove all the way there, I was very direct with the foster mom that I would not be able to take him that day, my house was not set up for another dog, but I could come the following weekend, which she said was ok with her.
As soon as I said I wanted him, her girlfriend started pressuring me to take him right away, I told her I had made arrangements with the other woman to come on Friday (this was the previous Saturday). Then I get "well, we have other applications...". I went back and forth, about our phone conversation, etc. and they kept pressuring me. We told them we couldn't take him that day but to let me know how it went. I didn't hear from them and I have called/texted/emailed but they haven't responded. I know he was not meant to be mine, but the fosters were not nice people.
I had inquired in February (after my failed IVF) with a breeder of a particular kind of shepherd I like, about pups. She said she would have pups in May if Iwanted. I never followed up..we lost Schultz, I did another IVF cycle, which I just found out today failed, Zoey had her ACL repaired, it's been nuts. THe breeder emailed me last night. She has 2 boys and 2 girls, did I want one....
I never thought I would be a person that would buy a dog, but I am seriously considering it. She's a very reputable breeder that comes highly recommended, it's not a backyard situation, she is one of 5 breeders on the east coast that handles this kind of shepherd.
Please don't flame me b/c I am considering buying a dog, it's not from a puppy mill or store. And honestly I"m not in the frame of mind to be flamed right now, I can usually take it but I'm kind of on the fence today.
THanks for letting me vent though!

Re: Having trouble finding a German Shepherd to rescue. Long.
I'm so sorry to hear what you are going through!
I just started reading this board (pets) because I am in the process of trying to adopt a dog and I have also been surprised at how difficult they make it for people to do a good thing!
You have certainly made a valiant effort to adopt a dog and I think that after all of that, going to a reputable breeder is completely understandable!
Good luck!

i think you've done everything you can possibly do to adopt. I wouldn't feel guilty about buying from a good breeder at this point.

wasn't there someone on here who had a friend that was trying to find a home for their shepard?
i don't think it's a bad thing at all to buy a dog as long as it's from a reputable breeder--good luck!

oh patty
in my opinion, you have every right to want the dog that YOU want. you are not buying from a puppy store.
would you prefer to have a rescue? of course! but don't turn down an opportunity to possibly meet the love of your life because you would have to buy him or her.

yes, actually that was me. I couldn't take her because she has a dominant personality and my Rottie is already the dominant in this house, she's very bossy, and they would not have been a good pair. My Rottie needs either a pup she can boss around or a submisssive older dog.

If you feel that you have good reasons, don't let others judge your decision to purchase from a reputable breeder. You have to do what's best for your situation, and it's easy for people to condemn without considering that. Not everyone who adopts is a saint and not everyone who buys is the devil.
Good luck finding your match.

I commend you for researching breeders and finding an appropriate one and not just buying the first puppy you see. I am currently waiting for a puppy to grow up a little more from a reputable breeder as well.
