Hawaii Itinerary
Can you give me some input on our tentative Hawaii itinerary? Reviews on the sights?
Day 1 - arrive in Honolulu Day 2 - maybe visit Pearl Harbor in the morning, travel to the Big Islans Day 3 - Volcano National Park Day 4 - Drive to Kona and visit with friends (his friend lives there so we’ll hang out and have dinner with them) Day 5 - travel to Maui, Nalcalele Blowhole Day 6 - Road to Hana (I doubt we will do the whole drive and after reading reviews on this, I don’t think I can handle the constant turns and narrow road) Day 7 - Haleakala Day 8 - travel back to Honolulu for the flight back home
We also plan on booking a luau.

Hawaii Itinerary
Pearl Harbor is on Oahu where Honolulu is - not the Big Island.

You’re right. Meant to say we’ll do that in the morning and then travel to the Big Island

Re: Hawaii Itinerary
You have a lot of island hopping, which just eats your day up. Maui is beautiful, so I'd try to spend more time there. There is not so much to do on The Big Island, so I would probably just cut down to 1-2 nights at the most there, rather than 3 nights.
I'd probably fly straight to the Big Island, do 1-2 nights there. Then fly to Maui and spend the bulk of your time there. Then fly home from Maui.

1. If going to Pearl Harbor - get tickets online. They sell out fast.
2. Where in the Big Island are you flying into? Hilo or Kona? Kona is a few hours away from Volcano National Park. If you can, I'd fly into Hilo, rent a car, go to the park and then head over to Kona after the park. Fly to Maui from Kona rather than Hilo to avoid having to criss-cross the island.
3. Where are you staying in Maui? The Nakalele Blowhole is on the "head" of Maui. Haleakala is down on the "shoulders." There's a great drive that goes from the Lahaina/Kaanapali and loops around the entire "head" of Maui. It will take you about 2 hours instead of all day. It's not quite as scenic as the Road to Hana, but it's pretty close. The thought of going to Hawaii and spending the entire day in the car does not appeal to me.
4. Haleakala - if you want to go for sunrise - get tickets in advance online. They sell out - there's very limited parking up there. We actually prefer going for sunset - it's just as beautiful - but that's just us. Also dress WARM - it's freezing up there.
5. When are you going? If during whale season, I'd try to take a whale watching trip out of Maui - it's a very memorable experience.
This is a lot of bouncing around in a week though. Don't forget even though the flights are short, you will need to allow the normal time to check in, go through security, return rental cars, etc.

Re: Hawaii Itinerary
This is a very aggressive itinerary for Hawaii. I caution that it is a long flight 11 hours and the jet lag is real.
I’ve been to Hawaii twice.
The first time I went we were in Honolulu for 4 nights. Yes this prob seems excessive but we stayed at the royal Hawaiian hotel Waikiki beach. We had a car rental and drove around to the north shore also did Kaluha beach and one day we also did an outrigger tour which was incredible. After 4 days of getting adjusted to the time change we flew direct to Papeete Tahiti and spent 5 days in bora bora
The 2nd time we flew to Honolulu and took a flight right away to Maui. We stayed at the four seasons Maui for 4 nights. We flew back to JFK through Honolulu.
We did not do the rode to Hana because i don’t like heights or scary car rides. We did go to Mamas fish house and that was nice.
Hawaii is a long way to go and I understand wanting to pack everything in, but you may want to revise your itinerary a bit.

Hawaii Itinerary
Thanks everyone. I feel like it’s way too much (my DH came up with this schedule) and I keep saying that I don’t want to be in the car for hours each day, especially with an 8.5 y/o. We are probably never going back again so he wants to do as much as he can. I’m going to talk to him again and try to revise the plans.
I read reviews on the Road to Hana and I can already tell it is not something I’d want to do.

Re: Hawaii Itinerary
Also, keep in mind that it takes a long time to travel on any of the Hawaiian islands. There aren't a lot of roads.
As far as the Road to Hana - it's beautiful - but the purpose is the journey. If it's not something you're going to love (being in a car all day on twisty roads), by all means, skip it. Or just do the first part of the trip.
We've done it twice. Both times we were on Maui for over two weeks so we didn't feel like we were "wasting a day" doing the drive.
Part of being in Hawaii, is just being in the present. This itinerary really doesn't allow you to soak that in. Spend time on the beach, snorkel, go for a hike or two, sit and watch the dolphins or whales playing in the water, have a picnic - it's not about running around trying to see everything you can.

The Road to Hana is beautiful and there are so many places to stop along the way. I wouldn't skip it, personally.

dh and i are huge snorkelers. I know you have a child with you, but to me, going to hawaii and not snorkeling is a big miss. check into Hanauma Bay on Oahu.

Re: Hawaii Itinerary
That is too much in a short period of time. I would skip the big island. Have you been to Miami? The big island is built up like that. I would spend time in Maui, Kauai, and Lanai. Those are the nicest places and really will make you feel like you are in another world. Take the day trip from maui on sail trilogy or the fery to Lanai. Hire a driver to drive you around hannah, the drive is worth it.

The Big Island is not at all built up - you are confusing the Big Island (Hawaii) with Oahu (where Waikiki Beach is).

Hawaii Itinerary
Thanks everyone. We booked all the hotels, inter-island flights and rental cars. We’ve narrowed down the activities and will most likely take it day by day once we get there.
