HCG Shot
Hi I am new on this site and was wondering if someone can help me out. I am doing IVF with ICSI...I am on my 8 day of Gonal-f and have so far 20 folicals and the Re thinks I will have my retreival on Sunday the 15th...My question is My HCG shot medication says to do it IM and all these web sites I go to say the same thing When I ask my RE they said to do it Sub Q...They said there is studys showing there is no diffrence about IM or Sub Q when it comes to the HCG shot.. and im a little questiable about it. I was just wondering if there RE told them anything similar......Thank you

Re: HCG Shot
my last 2 HCG shots were IM. I've never heard of them being sub q. I guess just go with your RE's recommendation.
What needle did the pharmacy give you? maybe that will decide which way to give the shot.
Good luck & much baby dust

Re: HCG Shot
well you will need 2 syringes, one to mix the HCG then one to adminster it.
what about calling your pharmacy? mine was Metro Drugs and they had their own nurse hotline for questions.
When are you taking the shot? maybe you can just bring it with you and have your REs office give it to you?

Re: HCG Shot
I used the same syringe to mix it, just switched the needle. BUt even though my box also said IM, I triple verified that it was sub cutaneous.

Re: HCG Shot
Funny timing on this post.... I just met with a friend today that took the IVF class at Cornell She was telling me that when she did IUIs, her trigger was administered differently than it will be for her IVF. She used ovidrel for the IUI and it was administered SQ
For IVF she is going to use pregnyl, which is an IM injection.
So basically, it depends on the med and the needle the gave you.

Re: HCG Shot
I had 3 ivf's and the number of eggs for each cycle varied. the most i had was 21, but i have heard of women having more. Yes, i did feel some discomfort - i was very bloated. They put me on a special low salt diet and told me not to drink a lot of fluids - i stuck to gatorade.
i know it is very uncomfortable now, but it will pass soon and you will feel better. Good luck with your cycle.
take care
