HDTV question

We bought my BIL's LCD HDTV this weekend from him. Now...I upgraded to the HD cable box last night. And plugged in the green, red and blue cables they provided us with. Then today we went to Best Buy and bought the HDMI wire and I plugged it in and don't see a difference. I tried to take it out to see if it looked different, but it looked the same. Do we need that $100 HDMI wire? I thought it would make the resolution better?Chat Icon

Re: HDTV question

I am certainly not tech savvy so bear with me and maybe someone who knows what they are talking abou tcan chime in, but on my TV we have to play it on "component 1" or something like that to get the HD quality. For our tv, it's the same button you use to switch from tv to video, but there are just additional options including component 1, 2, amd 3. See if yours has something like that.

Re: HDTV question

Hmmm interesting. It goes all the way up to "video 7" so do you mean to change that? Where is the "component" option on your tv?

Re: HDTV question

HDMI vs Component cable is and has always been a debatable topic. My opinion is one may be better but the naked eye can't tell the difference.

You don't need both cables plugged in at the same time. The beauty of HDMI is it carries both audio and video signals and enables you to toss the Component cables all together. If both cables are still connected, enter the setup of your cable box and ensure it is setup to use HDMI. Once you do this, turn everything off and remove the Component cables (green, red and blue cables) and turn everything on. You should have video and sound with just the HDMI cable connected.

I just keep hitting the button and I get TV, Video 1, V2, V3, Component 1, Component 2, and Component 3. But, the other poster seems to have a better sense of what to do. Sorry if I was more confusing than a help.

Oh okay that makes sense. Please I'm trying to explain another issue with the tv to my brother and he is not understanding my horrible description!

Thanks we are DEFINITELY returning it. The only difference when we plugged the HDMI in is the sound. Picture didn't change.

I use Monoprice cables as well. Stay away from Monster cables it's not worth it.
