Re: He broke my heart.... Don't open if there are children who can read in the vicinity
My son is just learning about Santa (he's 2) so way too young to not believe. But I didn't anymore when I was 9 also I think. I asked my mother, and she did tell me there is no Santa, but the idea of Santa and giving and sharing is what Christmas is all about. Or something like that, I remember what she said was soothing and made me feel better about it, though I was still sad.
It's a change--your son is getting old enough to think differently and question the things adults around him tell him. I imagine it is hard ot have him leave Santa behind, but he's moving on, and that's how it should be ultimately (eventhough no parent wants their child to grow up).
Nuns told my mother there was no Santa also when she was 7. What is up with these nuns and Santa?

awww you are not overreacting! It is sad when they stop believing... I was probably the same age (but I kept it going for awhile ~ I had younger brothers) and waited for them to stop believing! (before I said anything to my parents)

Thank you to everyone for your responses.
I did explain to him about the Spirit of Christmas, and was able to give him some real examples of how this has happened in my life, and in his, even though he didn't know it. Last year, Nick desperately wanted a Wii for Christmas. There was no way we could afford it... it was out of the question. He asked Santa for it, but it wasn't going to happen. At work, at breakfast one day, in the context of a conversation about kids being disappointed at Christmas time, I happened to mention how my son wanted a Wii. This was the only time I ever told anyone about it, even family. Well, about 3 days before Christmas, a nicely dressed young man rang my doorbell at 9pm, and handed me a Wii. He told me it was for my son, wished me a Merry Christmas, got into his car, and drove away. You could have knocked me over with a feather. Still to this day, I really don't know who the guy was.
I told Nick this story, and told him that this is how there is Santa in the world, and that hopefully we can one day be Santa for someone else. We volunteer and donate food, toys, and books, but hopefully one day we can do something like that for someone else.
Thanks for all the responses, it makes me happy to know that others have gone through similar stuff....
its absolutely amazing that there are such wonderful people in this world who will do something like this. This story made me cry happy tears while i was reading it.
I think you explained it beautifully to your son and Santa will always be a part of Christmas, even if he knws he doesnt "really" exist.
