He saw the next specialist this morning- good and bad
The blood in his ears seems to be coming from his scratching REALLY far into his ears. He tells us we really need to prevent him from doing that in his sleep. I'm open for suggestions on how to stop a two year old from doing that in his sleep.
BUT...
He is very concerned about the size of his tonsils, the loud snoring and the sleep apnea. He is being sent for a sleep study and he thinks DS will need surgery in the next few months.
Thanks for the well wishes throughout this process!!!

Well my goodness Kelly... I'm sure you are ready to get off this roller coaster you have been on for the last 2 years!
Hugs to you and that adorable munchkin of yours!
As for stopping him from scratching his ears in his sleep... how about a really cute pair of earmuffs????

Re: He saw the next specialist this morning- good and bad
My nephew has a sleep study done earlier in the year (he was 6) and my BIL said it was the worst. My nephew kept rolling and pulling off the wires that were attached to him. They thought he had sleep apnea also as well as enlarged tonsils and adenoids. He does have sleep apnea and he had to have his adenoids removed (they didn't do the tonsils because they felt they were enlarged because of the adenoids). He did outpatient surgery at Mather and he had a pretty good recovery. He got to eat applesauce, ice cream, milkshakes for a couple of day.

Re: He saw the next specialist this morning- good and bad
DD was scratching her face recently. She wouldn't keep anything on her hands at night (thumbsucker) All I could really do was keep her nails really SHORT and well filed.
Could he have allergies? I know when my allergies occur my ears get really itchy. I could see how a child would try to get at the itch.
Could it be a "soothing" method for him? Does he have a lovey (I think I remember a lion) or something else with a tactile soothing feel?
I wish I had more to offer, poor little guy.

I have been pretty diligent with his nails. He doesn't have seasonal allergies. (Well, at least he didn't when he was tested 6 months ago. Only allergies are cats and shellfish.)
He has moved on from his lion and sleeps with a stuffed puppy and moose. (Which we wash every week in his normal detergent.) I am hoping the ears are just a phase.
Now these damn tonsils though.

Since I had my babies I have had issues with my ears. What happens is (Totally TMI but maybe this will help you) I get this very liquidy almost watery discharge that itches maddeningly. basically sometimes the balance in your ear can become "off" and bacteria generate causing itching and irritation. Eventually I scratched them so hard with Q tips that I got Otitis externa(swimmers ear-any infection of the external part of the ear) they gave me a drop I *think* is called corticosteroid. It worked in about 3 days. Ask the Dr about that...

Re: He saw the next specialist this morning- good and bad
I am assuming his ears are not infected-the doctor checked for this or fluid in the middle ear right?
You can try ear muffs or gloves, but if your DS is anything like mine, they aren't staying in place. DS scratches his ears at times, especially when he's teething. The only things I've found to work are keeping his nails very short (I often file them after clipping them to remove any sharpness remaining) and I put Aquaphor on the outer ears themselves (not in the ear).
Good luck with the sleep study. I'm afraid I have no advice on that. Hopefully he will just sleep so they can see what is happening.

Yes. He had never had an infection. We have brought him OFTEN thinking something was up, but they have always been clear of fluid. We were at a loss. And he's done teething, so we are beginning to think it's a comfort thing.

I have done the same--one time he did have wax in his ears so I felt a little justified in bringing him, but the other times, nothing. I don't want an ear infection, but it's hard to tell when they are sick or not. At this point, I tend to think the same of my DS--it's a comfort thing that probably started when he was teething.
Does he have a doll or some blanket he likes to sleep with or can you try to introduce one? That might help if it's a comfort issue.

In the past 6 months he has accumulated a lot of comfort toys he wants to sleep with. He always has to have two stuffed animals. Other days he decides which ones he wants. IN fact, he is literally sleeping right now with a new bag he got for his birthday. He really wanted it in bed with him. Whatever he needs.

I was thinking the mittens for his hands, even if you have to put them on him after he falls asleep...
Good luck with DS's tonsils. I don't have any experience with those.

The only thing I can think of are those baby gloves for infants to help stop the scratching.

Re: He saw the next specialist this morning- good and bad
I have a history of both itchy ears and enlarged tonsils. I think that the conditions are related and that both conditions can relate to allergies. As for the itchy ears, my mom says that I used to cry a lot when she washed my hair. She thought that the soap was getting into my eyes but as soon as I could talk I told her that what was bothering me was my ears. She was either getting shampoo or water in my ears. She did not realize it was happening until I was able to tell her that it was not my eyes.
