He will eat when he is hungry. Which is late!
The doctor has been telling me that for months.. It wasn't always true. He can go for 2-3 days without eating. He has feeding issues and it takes a toll on him. He also spent the last 8 months cutting his molars.. He cut all four of his one year molars last month! I have been trying to figure out why he has been going to bed so late recently... He is HUNGRY around 9-930pm... That is when he will basically eat anything I put in front of him. Then I wait for about an hour to put him to bed after he ate so he won't get a belly ache!!! Great... Hopefully the doctor will finally see at his 21 month well check that this feeding problem is more then him being picky!

Re: He will eat when he is hungry!!!
Is he drinking?? If so, cut out the drinking completely so that he eats. Him eating at 930 is too too late.
Also a lot of kids cut their molars in pairs or all together (mine did)..

Re: He will eat when he is hungry!!!
He only gets milk in the morning and afternoon. Then a bottle before bed. He drinks anywhere from 12-18 oz of milk a day. He drinks 2 sippys of water/juice during the day. I cut out his fluids after 6. I have been giving him fruit, yogurt, and cereal when he eats late.. He would probably eat a horse by that point.. Dr said he is ok eating then.. Just don't put him to bed right away.

So he only drinks liquids all day and then eats at 930? At his age? That's too late and if it were one of mine, I'd cut out all liquids so that he eats. He isn't eating because his belly is getting full on liquids..

If you think it is more than him being picky I would suggest you call early intervention. You do not need your doctor to call. There is nothing a pediatrician can do other than suggest a nutritionist.

Re: He will eat when he is hungry!!!
Good luck b/c my Jack is the same. He eats 3 foods total (shakes, cake & donuts :( . Ped wasn't concerned. I pushed for full bloodwork as I didn't see how 6 months of eating like this could be normal. (6 months ago he stopped all baby food). We finally went to a feeding therapist on our own after he did not qualify for EI (b/c it's only feeding & not speech or anything else) & it's been a few weeks & they haven't gotten too far w/ him yet. We got a new therapist last time & she said he needs some radical therapy b/c this is serious.
So I can understand
ETA the feeding therapist told us a small percentage of children WILL NOT eat when they are hungry (my son being one of them). We tried for 4 days only offering him foods we wanted him to eat & he went w/o.
My son too will drink any liquid (including soap/toothpaste/etc) but has a sensory issue/behavior feeding problem.

In the morning he will eat some fruit and cheerios and maybe some yogurt. He only drinks 3-4 oz of milk in the am... He isn't a big lunch eater. Never has been. Maybe some ritz crackers or toast. Then he will go the rest of the day without eating anything. I can put a piece of cake in front of him and he won't touch it. By the time bedtime gets near, he starts to let me know he is hungry... That is his big meal of the day. If I don't feed him, he WILL wake up in the middle of the night looking for food. Has only been going on for about a week now... He only gets water/juice after he eats something. Can't deprive him of that. Two 6 ounce cups of fluids isn't the problem. Since he has been drinking that much for months..

My son is speech delayed and has had texture issues since he started solids at 4 months. DS has gone days without eating. I called the dr and they said as long as he was drinking milk, it was fine.. Can't be normal.. DS has been off of most foods since a little over one. He was on mostly purees until March. And then he went off them. Now he will eat only what he wants and when he wants. And I don't give in and give him junk food.. I am going to call and see if I can get him evaluated.. Thanks for the info..

I think cutting out all liquids is really dangerous advice when the summer has just begun and we are looking at humid weather in the 90's. You can't deny a toddler of liquids- he will dehydrate very quickly. And it sounds like he is drinking a perfectly normal amount, doesn't like too much at all where his belly would be "full on liquids." And I don't understand why you are telling her that 9:30 is too late for him to eat. If that's when he gets hungry, that's when he needs to eat. As long as he can sleep later in the AM to make up for the later bedtime, I don't see any issue with it at all, especially if the ped gave the ok. What works for one child/family may not work for another. That doesn't mean it is wrong.
Kerry- I agree with the PP who suggested maybe looking into early intervention if you are truly concerned. At least see if they will evaluate him and hen you can have an answer one way or the other. Best to nip it the bud if there is an issue!

Thanks Maureen... I would never cut out his fluids. If he isn't eating, then he definitely needs fluids IMO.. He has been sleeping from about 1030pm-830am, which is great for him and me! I have looked into calling EI before, and then DS would start to eat again and I put it out of my head. But now that he is almost 21 months and it isn't getting better, I am definitely going to look into it and get the ball rolling.. Once again thank you.. Makes me feel better that other people understand me...

Re: He will eat when he is hungry!!!
And he will. My ds has gone DAYS with just cheerios in the morning. They go thru little phases. Cant really stress it too much. Maybe quit the afternoon milk and he may eat earlier.
I also dont think you really need to wait an hour after he eats to put him to bed. But, im also the one who will let him in the pool right after lunch. No waiting.
Do you only offer him food in the highchair? Or will you leave food for him on a table or something?
I found for MY kid, if I leave him food on his table he is more likely to eat it. He started just playing with the food in the HC, I took that as a sign he was done with the HC. Maybe try letting him graze and he will eat.

I have tried to cut out and cut down on his afternoon milk...But that only made him not able to nap.. He gets milk before nap time. Around 1pm.. I gave up on the highchair for now. I leave food on the couch or table in the living room. He usually will nibble on something that is there. But it doesn't equal a meal.. I quit stressing on the food battle a while ago. I just was trying to figure out why he was going to sleep so late this past week and it was because he was hungry at 9pm or so..But at least he is getting one meal in him a day..

I guess you only read select words.. I wrote IF IT WERE ONE OF MINE, and yes, IMO, 9:30 at NIGHT to eat is late... my kids are in bed at 8! and they are 2, 4, and 6.. my kids eat dinner the latest by 630, but usually around 530..
if the child has feeding issues, then she should address it with the pediatrician or a specialist to figure out what the problem is but for a toddler (without feeding issues) to not eat but then to drink 3 bottles of milks and another 3 cups of water and juice (which is esp. not good; empty calories) is not good imo.. Also, I've learned the hard way that just because a ped gives the go ahead on something doesn't always mean that they are right..
