Health Insurance Q.. Is it risky to have In-Network coverage only?
DH and I are healthy, and have never had to go out of network, we have Aetna. But DD is 8 months old, she's our first, so I am a little scared of the "WHAT IFs"... I have to make my 2010 benefits slection soon, right now we have 90% in network/70% out of network coverage. It works for us because DD was born earlier this year, so that helped with all the medical costs. We don't have plans to have a baby in 2010, but who knows what life will give us? Even that, my OB is in network, and so are all of our other docs. So I am thinking of doing 90% covered in network with no coverage out of network for 2010.. Or should I play it safe and get 80% in network/60% out of network coverage? The cost difference between these two is $1300+ annually.
UGH I hate doing this every year!

i would absolutely make sure you have some out of network coverage. even if you have a high deductible the costs of the medical care you could pay in case of an emergency visit are very high. also, some specialists don't take in-network coverage, only out of network.
this has just been my experience - maybe someone else could help

our new insurance plan has no out of network... we have no choice in the matter- I'm not thrilled with it, but in a major metropolitan area, you'll find someone good that takes your plan.

I would not be crazy about not having out of network benefits. It really depends on the quality of you insurance some companies have better doctors in their system than others do. What if you have a series problem and you child has to see a specialist - that is where it can be a problem - you can find good doctors for regular visits but if you have a problem you want to be able to go to the best out there if you have a problem. What about a plan that covers some OON doctors but doesn't completely exclude them? Is that a choice? I mean 50% if better than having to pay 100% if you have an issue.
