Healthcare and Childcare FSA

Does anyone know if you can change your elections once you have the baby?

My enrollment period ended on 12/01/09 for next year and stupid me did not elect to contribute to either healthcare or childcare FSA and then we got the BFP on Wednesday, so now I'm thinking I'm going to need it for PG medical expenses and if we decide to put DS in part time nursery school when DC # 2 comes.

I believe you can change your benefits and FSA anytime only if you get married/divorced or have a baby. Check with your employer though. I know in my company they allow changes only if these things happen outside of the enrollment period.

Thanks! I can't check with my HR because she happens to be one of my very good friends and I don't think I am ready to tell her yet. Chat Icon

No, you can't change your Flexible Spendng elections after the baby comes if it's after your enrollment period.

We found that out the hard way last year....

Anything other than FSA can be changed. I believe you have 30 days from the birth to make the changes.

I was told yesterday from my benefits coordinator that you can add money to FSA after the birth of a baby (even if it's outside of the enrollment period).

Maybe its plan by plan because I DEFINITELY was able to increase mine when DS was born. The only catch is it can only be used towards expenses incurred from the birthdate onwards (i.e. the hospital will be covered but your prenatal vists or costs will not).

Correct, check with your specific plan (don't even go through HR, just call your FSA directly and they'll tell you). With my plan, you can make changes at any time during the year for marriage, divorce, death, childbirth, etc.

Also, with our plan the "cutoff" was December 1st to ensure that you get the FSA card in time for the new year, but we actually have until December 31st to decide on the amounts for 2010. So check on that with your FSA people too!

As others have stated, I don't believe you can make any changes or even sign up until open enrollement. The only thing you can do is medical coverage under the qualification of the birth of your child...a change in life event.
