not doubting that this is a tribal tradition but in re: to seal, it is an urban legend.
Yeah, I've never read that the scars were from tribal markings. I've read about the accident (being an urban legend) but I've always known it to be from Lupus (it also cause his hair loss).

He had Lupus? Someone told me the scars were from a motorcycle accident???
The scars in his face are tribal marks. In Africa it is a tradition for the people to get tribal marks at birth.
nope - thats a big myth about his scars!
