Hello all! Off from LIW and into a home (hopefully!)

Hi everyone!
I am a sort of transplant from LIW and came upon this board whilst we began our home search about 2 weekends ago. We have two houses we like for two different reasons, leading us to the eternal question: do you buy a great house at an ok location (ie. double yellow road) or a house needing work (new kitchen and wood panel removal) in a terrific location of the same area? Just trying to get some feedback..DH are discussing and getting back to the same question time and time again and are wondering what thoughts float around out there...thanks so much!! Chat Icon

I've always heard that, but we are just scared of the initial cost of it...

Re: Hello all! Off from LIW and into a home (hopefully!)

We're buying a small house that is in great condition but just tiny (and under budget) in a great location.

I've come to the conclusion that it may not be perfect, turn-key and all that, but we can make it that way over time. We'll have the patience to wait till we can afford to make the changes we want to.

In the meantime, the joy of ownership in a neighborhood we're in love with is plenty. Chat Icon

Welcome to the board! Good Luck with the house hunting! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We bought the ugly house on the block and are fixing it up. Our neighbors love us. It's been a lot of work, I will not lie about that, but it is rewarding in the end. Our house is really coming along. We bought the house and got a pretty good deal on it, so the work on the house hasn't been so bad, because we already had the money to do the work because we saved on the house. (check out pics in my "House" album. And we love the area we bought in. Close to family and it's a very friendly neighborhood. GL in your search! Chat Icon

We bought the fixer upper in the better neighborhood and are moving along slowly but surely!

It's a lot of work but, it's rewarding to see the finished product.

Re: Hello all! Off from LIW and into a home (hopefully!)

it's much harder to move a house than do upgrades. so i would go for the house that needs work but is in a great location. as long as you aren't afraid of a little work. and then you can make it all your own! GL!

Thanks a lot, ladies! I know we will come around, but we've only been out 3 days so we are thinking let's wait a bit more, but I want to see the house we are thinking about again..you forget when you run around! Thanks for the advice again!

Congratulations on taking this step! It's so hard to choose--we were in the same position as you. There was one house that was slightly larger and needed less work, but we didn't like the location or yard as much. The other house was slightly smaller, wasn't in bad shape, but needed more work, but it has a great yard and we loved the location.

We went for the house in the location that we loved figuring that was something we could never change. The yard is big enough to add on if we decide to enlarge the house over time.

Re: Hello all! Off from LIW and into a home (hopefully!)

you have to think about resale also...if you ever decide to sell, its always harder to sell a house on a busy street than it is a house on a quiet street.

Re: Hello all! Off from LIW and into a home (hopefully!)

We were actually thinking that whatever issues we had with buying the house would be those that we would have selling it and then we thought about whether it would be repairable...great minds think alike! Wish us luck-we are seeing more new places today!
