Hello from the 'other' side
I never believed it when other people said they have no time to do things they used to do after the baby comes but it's SO true! Jonah is a terrific baby, yet when I'm not spending time cuddling him ... or feeding .. or just plain STARRING at him, I've been sleeping and prioritizing my time with dh!! (and prioritizing my time with the dvr!!) It just dawned on me I have yet to update my LIF family!
It just amazes me that 2 weeks ago our lives changed forever and FINALLY we got to be the couple going into the hospital as two and leaving as three. Looking back, it's still surreal, and I LIVED IT!
I guess I'll just turn this into a birth story- why not - because I actually have time to update now and who knows when precious time like THAT will come around again! So basically, it all started with my scheduled csection two weeks ago at Winthrop. I never posted on here about my scheduled date because A - I wasn't so sure I'd make it to my scheduled date anyway and B - so much of this journey has been so controlled. I wanted some mystery like the rest of you ladies
I woke up the morning of August 21st and though I was terrified for MONTHS leading up to the csection (he was breech and we had a feeling he would not be flipping) I woke up that morning calm and ready. I knew that of all things we had been through, this was nothing to fear. I knew my dh and I did all we could, my doctors did all they could to get us to 39wk3d, and the rest was up to my OB that day and a higher power.
I remember walking into the OR saying to myself.. ."this is it .. .this is the room I will become a mom in and I will not leave this room without him in my arms" ... Now, let me just say I am a woman of fear of paranoia If there's no reason to be nervous about something, I'll invent a reason. i hate medical procedures and hospitals. Having said that - I can tell you, the anticipation of the csection for the months leading up was far scarier than the procedure itself. The best advice is to really just roll with it. The spinal was nothing (I was actually afraid for that part and by the time it was done, I didn't even know they started ). My feet/belly/chest getting numb was probably the oddest feeling I've ever encountered, but knowing our baby was on the way definitely helped keep the fear at bay. By the time I was really getting numb and we were about to start, my dh was let into the room. I don't even remember what we were talking about for the 20 minutes leading up to our son's arrival.... I can't even tell you what we said to each other the moment we head him cry .. it's all such a blur - but one sound I will never forget is hearing his first wail of a cry. For years I heard about these moments secondhand from friends who were lucky enough to have such an experience... but still, nothing could prepare you. Finally a nurse brought him over to me all bundled up and absolutely perfect as can be. I'm still in awe thinking of that moment and at times, still in disbelief too.
One thing that really threw me for a loop once we got into recovery was the shaking. Ohhh wowwwww was that a shake I will not soon forget! I heard you get the shakes after a csection but this was like nothing I expected. I had this uncontrollable body shiver for about a good hour or so. Another unexpected event - standing up for the first time that evening. I wasn't really in pain laying in bed so I was taken by absolute surprise the moment I tried to stand up ... and pardon me -- but it hurt like a B!TCH!! .. I took everyone's advice that I heard so many times before though. The next day, I walked. And walked. And walked. I didn't stay in bed the entire day. I was in tremendous pain but I did what I could to make sure I didn't just take the easy way out and lay there. By the time we had my son's bris a week later, people were STUNNED that I just had major abdominal surgery because I was moving around so well. I came home and only took Motrin a few times. Walking is the best advice you will get!
A quick hospital review- the food at Winthrop was great, I was lucky to have my own room for the duration of my stay, and the nurses were awesome. (ok, most of them were.)
I can't believe that after everything, we finally were able to bring home our baby. It was exactly one year ago that our surrogate cycle got canceled for the second time. I remember sitting in a mall in Boston in sheer devastation wondering what my next move would be. Something inside me said to go another round and to give my body that one last ditch effort because you just never know. Exactly one year after we found our our first surrogate cycle was canceled, I gave birth to our son. I've spent so much time over the last nearly 4 years, counting down time ... wishing away weeks and months ... hoping to get another cycle over with, etc.....Finally, I can live in the moment and I'm searching for ways to make time stand still.
Our son is just the most amazing thing to happen in my life.. Miracles do happen - sometimes they just take a little time. Here's our little miracle the day we took him home from the hospital:
