HELP - Screaming at night

For the past 3 nights DS has been waking up hysterical crying. I go into his room to soothe him, he falls back asleep only to wake up hysterical crying 15min later. This goes on for around 2 hours. Occasionally he will fuss at night and I normally do not pick him up just soothe him by rubbing his back and head and that normally helps but NOTHING will soothe him, I have to pick him up and lay him in bed with me because he is just too hysterical even then he is still crying so hard.

Do you think it is his teeth? Gas? I tried mylicon in his last bottle and around 12:30 after screaming crying I gave him some tylenol. He finally fell asleep in my bed (1st time ever) and woke up a bit cranky. Not his normal personality which is alway happy, smiley never cries real tears.

DS does not have any teeth yet but I did notice his bottom gum looked like it had a whitish mark.

What do I do? Any advice?

Re: HELP - Screaming at night

How old is your son? From the pic, maybe 6-8 mos?

Definitely could be teething. When my son was, I would give him some children's motrin at night and that would take the edge off. Same story though, waking up in the night screaming, because face it, who would want to have to go through teeth coming out of their sweet little gums? Chat Icon

If you feel his gum line, they might feel slightly swollen and tight. He could be drooling a lot too. He may also when you rub his gums, try to bite down on them. We used to give my son a frozen bagel to bite on, but I would watch him closely for when the bagel started to defrost so he wouldn't bite anything off- I'd then take it away and refreeze it and give him another. He liked those zwieback cookies for that too.

Another thing to add to his gums at night is baby orajel, that worked well.

Re: HELP - Screaming at night

YES!! I gave him Motrin and I also tried the Humphrey's pellets (sp?). For the past two night he did not wake up hysterical crying.

Last night he did wake up crying but nothing too bad he went back to bed a bit later.

Is it OK to give tylenol or Motrin everynight when they are teething? He does not get it during the daytime.

Thank you for the advise! Chat Icon

Re: HELP - Screaming at night

I did, never had a problem with it, but just make sure you adhere to the amounts based on weight.

With my son, after a week or so when I realized he was really teething the tooth popped and then there no longer was a need

Glad it helped :)

Re: HELP - Screaming at night

I just found these links

http://parents.berkeley.edu/advice/babies/teething.html

and

http://www.babynamesworld.com/forum/topic95846.html

It is true in that the amounts are smaller, but the one poster on the berkeley site is correct in saying that they are not FDA regulated and as such, imho, I wouldn't take the chance.

Of course, that's just my opinion, but I am not a homeopathic person at all.

But the motrin worked great Chat Icon
