HELP!! Dog rolling in another animal's poop!
Sorry this is looong......So we recently moved to a new place with a yard, and we let Sofie (my yorkie) go outside several times a day. We don't really watch her every move every time. And just recently (the past two weeks), she has been coming back in with the strong scent of poop on her back and neck.
I know this is very common, but what I don't know is why she is doing it all of a sudden (she is 4 1/2 yrs old and JUST started doing it), and how to curb this behavior.
I guess the only way to really stop her is to stay with her in the yard, but it has a lot of brush and wooded areas that she runs through so quickly and I am hoping there is another way to discourage the behavior besides following her every time she is outside. I've been bathing her every other day - which I've read might be making it worse, since she doesn't like the scent of herself clean. But I have no choice, I can't have her laying all over my furniture like that.
Please HELP!!! I almost threw up today when she jumped on my lap and I nuzzled my face into her neck This needs to stop!

Re: HELP!! Dog rolling in another animal's poop!
Unless someone brings up something new, I think this is one of those things that just doesn't have a great solution.
I've read a lot about the rolling in 'bad' smells thing and no one really has the definitive answer on why they do it. Obviously, they like very different smells than we do. I try to remember what an alcohol-based perfume must smell like to an animal that has 100 times the sensitivity in his nose than I do. We just like different things.

You have to get the stink off of her, absolutely. But what about making sure the shampoo is not something that you like to smell? Meaning, if it doesn't have a strong scent to you, your dog may not try so hard to get rid of it. Also, try drying her with a towel that already has her scent on it. We have doggie towels that we use to dry him off when he goes out in the rain and he loves towel time.

Getting a different shampoo is what DH mentioned. We have a towel we use to dry her off from the rain too, but we didn't use it to dry her after her baths. We'll try that.
Thanks for that suggestion.

Re: HELP!! Dog rolling in another animal's poop!
My dog (we've had for about 2 weeks) does this too. He also put the poop in his mouth first and throws it around for a bit before rolling in it.
I didn't think of it as trying to get a scent off of them, I just thought dogs did this - that maybe it was some kind of territorial thing.
I'd love any suggestions on how to stop the behavior as well

Re: HELP!! Dog rolling in another animal's poop!
My brother's dog does this. He put red pepper and moth balls around the yard to keep the other animals from eliminating there. Obviously this could be a problem if your dog will eat these things but if they won't it could be really effective. The only problem I had when I started doing this is the crows took all the moth balls. I actually watched them rub it all over themselves and then fly away with them. It protects them from insects, they are very smart. It shouldn't be an issue this time of your year though. Sorry for the sidetrack but it could be really helpful to keep the other animals away.

I'm not sure. I'm thinking its his, because it is in the backyard when he does it, and I can't always find his poop to pick it up when I go out there. But he did it the first day we had him, so obviously it couldn't have been his. I suppose it could be from a cat, or raccoon or something.

Re: HELP!! Dog rolling in another animal's poop!
Only 1 of my 3 did this (the little one) and I have no idea why. I thought he would outgrow it when it initially started happening. Not only did he roll in it he ate it. It's totally grosss. Nothing like him coming inside and then licking your face after what he just ate!!DH's friends nick-named him the terd burgler!
I went to the vet with this and he gave me a powder to put on their food that will make their poop smell really bad so that he wont want to eat it. It's called FORBID. I havent had to use it b/c he's stopped doing it but, we watched him daily for weeks and told him NO right about the time he was ready to drop and roll or eat.
That was another thing the vet asked us to do was to monitor him and so far it's worked. Give that a shot.

For all those with poop rollers...eaters, etc...
I dont want to alarm you but if it's raccoon poop that can be very very dangerous...racoons can carry a very serious form (to humans that is) of roundworm. So my first suggestion to you is to check your yard carefully frequently for poop of other animals and carefully remove it. I suggest you google raccoon feces or raccoon roundworm, removal of raccoon feces, etc and see what I mean...its scary to read about to be honest. I know this b /c my female dog ate some strange poop in my yard so I have some experience with this....
So after you check your yard, I also suggest giving your dog a monthly dewormer such as Interceptor...that way if your dog does ingest Raccoon feces it cannot contract Raccoon roundworm and carry it....and risk transmitting it to your family, etc.
Also...another suggestion I have to everyone is to pick up your dog's poop asap. If your dog does carry some kind of roundworm it usually would need to sit and "germinate" let's say...for a week or two to become contagious and harmful to humans. Fresh poop is not generally harmful to humans from a roundworm/worm standpoint....odd but true.
As for suggestions on getting him to stop, that's a tough one. Short of making sure your yard/property is poop free...

Also, be aware that the worm tests aren't 100% effective. Brinkley had roundworm within a month of us getting him even though he had tested clean at the vet. It takes several weeks for them to show outward signs that they're resident. (trying not to be too gross)

I know what you mean. WHen my female ate the poop we tested her poop twice...to be sure....even though she was on a monthly dewormer.

Thanks That info is very helpful. I'm going to have DH check the yard. My pup didn't do it today, so that was a relief. She is currently on Interceptor so I'm not freaking out, but I'll keep up with it.

Also be sure to wash hands thoroughly after petting or bathing her, esp if you are going to eat, put your hands in your mouth, etc....
At least she is on Interceptor. Make sure to give it m onthly as directed. B/c even if she doesn't eat poop, if she grooms herself she will ingest poop inadvertently.
