Help me find a town to live in!
Sooo...we are finally moving back to the ny area We had been thinking Westport Ct but the commute is too long.
We are thinking of the north shore bc dh's family is on the south shore and we can be close but not too close KWIM.
Any suggestions on towns where we could find a house under a million
we'd like good schools a cute little downtown area w/ restaurants etc. nice family friendly tree-line streets commuting distance to NYC
Does this even exist? We thought about oyster bay but I don't know much about it.
We'll probably be moving within 2 months and I'm soo excited.
TIA

Great Neck, Huntington, and Northport are what popped into my head immediately. Oh, and Port Washington.

Re: Help me find a town to live in!
anything on the port washington train line is a great commute to NYC.
Roslyn is not a good train line.

Re: Help me find a town to live in!
Are you still thinking of southern CT at all? Westport is a great town, great schools, love the shopping and restaurants, very $$ ...
there are other towns further south in CT that are very nice- New Caanan for example-I believe but am not 100% is exit 34 on the Merrit- nice drive, not far from the city, good school district...
Darien is another nice town
Greenwich- there is a not so nice part of greenwich but most of it is GREAT-good schools, on the border of NY and CT, so not so far
(I have lived in CT for 7 years now, I live in Monroe (20 min north of fairfield) so if you have any questions ask away! I might be able to help

Re: Help me find a town to live in!
Port Washington, Manhasset, Great Neck, and Huntington are all nice towns below $1 million (not sure about Huntington schools, never researched it). All have downtown areas, and the first 3 are not a bad commute to the city at all.
I would stay away from Glen Cove or Oyster Bay. Nice towns from what I've seen, but the train line really stinks.

Also what is your price range? That would help.

Re: Help me find a town to live in!
we researched the North Shore as well.
The Port Washington line seems to be the best commute, followed by the Huntington Line.
Most of the schools are tops, with the exception of Oyster Bay and Huntington.
If you like Roslyn, we learned that most people commuted from Mineola (Huntington train line) and if you like parts of the Oyster Bay line, you can go to Syosset, Hicksville or Port Washington branches. But be careful - they can easily add 10+ minutes to the commute.

Re: Help me find a town to live in!
We live in Garden City - lots of homes are walkable to the train, its a short commute to NYC, schools are fantastic and there are lots of tree lined streets with a small downtown. You can find something in the $800-900k range that would be decent. FM if you want more info.

Re: Help me find a town to live in!
Thanks everyone for your answers - they are really helpful. We are looking to spend no more than 900K. And commuting/trains are pretty important. I am going to research you suggestions tonight but keep them coming.
Also, I am assuming there are plenty of daycare options in the area? am I right?
again thanks so much

I agree, I am in East Norwich, very reasonable, on north shore. No downtown, its a small town, but your equal distance from the downtown Oyster Bay area and the Syosset village. .
DH and I always wonder about East Norwich. Can you tell us more about it? Property sizes, what is the range of prices homes go for? Etc... You are the first person I have ever "met" that lived there.
Thanks!

As others have said: Great Neck, Manhasset, and Port Washington. All of these areas seem to have what you're looking for. (I'm partial to Port Washington, since we just moved there! )

Babylon
A good friend of mine lives there. She has a gorgeous home and there is an adorable village with great restaurants and shops. Her husband takes the express train to the city every day.

Re: Help me find a town to live in!
So I took a look at some of the towns and was wondering - is there something "wrong" with Huntington?
It seems you can get so much more there for your money so jaded me is always wondering what the catch is?
