help me tell myboss I am preggo and not coming back Im such a baby lol
My whole thing is that with 2 kids its not worth it for me to work full time to make 200 because I will be paying for daycare. Also he only gave me 8 weeks with my first DD, and it wasnt enough time and i want to take a lot longer this time and then maybe work part tiem and my mom may be able to watch them 2 days a week.
help me as to what to say please!! TIA

I wouldn't say anything yet about coming back or working p/t. Just tell him you're pregnant and thats it for now. Wait til later on to have the p/t discussion.

I wouldn't say a word about not coming back. My friend took her maternity leave and didn't tell them yet that she wasn't going to come back. Long story short, she ended up geting let go during that time, and has now been collecting unemployment for the past year..even though she wasn't going to come back anyway.

Well I know he doesnt want part time, because i spoke with him about it with my first DD and he said he couldn't do it. I don't know if it will be different this time or not. The other thing is its a law office with one attorney and me thats it. Im the only staff. So he has to get someone to basically take my place. None of the maternity laws apply since its a small company. He pays my insurance only and not DD's. I dont get paid for maternity leave.

I also agree on not telling them you are not coming back! Just tell them you are pregnant for now. When the time comes then you can tell them you have decided not to come back. If you feel uncomfortable waiting until your on maternity leave to do so, you can tell them right before you have the baby.  Don't worry I am a big baby when it comes to those types of things too.

Right but he made this whole big deal a little while back about how he would need 3 months notice to replace me so instead of just getting a temp he would find someone permanent. I think i am only being fair even though i shoudl think about myself!!

ITA! no reason to give more info then needed right now...you never know what may change over the next few months and its best to keep your options open for now

3 months notice is totally crazy!!! i would give him a month tops!

I can see why you wouldn't want to tell him at all, and just not come back. BUT I also see that if you do ever want a recommendation from this employer, or look for a new job that they would call him and check up on you, you might not want to leave him hanging high and dry. You don't want to ruin an employment opportunity 2, 4 or 6 years from now because you cut ties badly with this employer.
So, with thinking about the future, I would sit him down and talk to him about what you are thinking about doing, and how you want to give him some time to find a replacement. You can always bring up working part time with him, perhaps he will let you do that this time. You never know until you ask. Good luck!

Then you should compromise, and give them notice but not three months! That is just too much! Normal notice is 2 weeks, and 4 weeks for managerial positions. If you give 4 weeks that is more than acceptable, and how would they even know you were thinking about it longer than that? Keep a copy of your letter of resignation stating you are giving four weeks notice, and your projected last day or work. This shouldn't burn any bridges, and you should be able to use them for a recommendation down the road.

Thank you I agree! I don't want to leave on bad terms esp. because my husband and mom both have pending cases with him as well, and because of recommendations in the future. I don't think he will do the 12 weeks maternity that I want, I even want longer :) and then do part time with someone else. It doesn't hurt to ask I guess. I just get so bent out of shape about having these talks I don't know why and I stress myself out about it until I do it

I wish it was but i dont think so. I answer phones in the office I basically do everything. And all the files are in the office and he said he wouldnt want them leaving the office in fear stuff would get lost.

This is a two person operation-it's not like it is a big firm or anything. You work together day in and day out and have a relationship.
Unless he has been an arse to you, I would tell him of your plans and I would give him the 3 months he asked for.
I think you are doing the right thing by telling him ahead of time

I agree with this completely and I am pretty much in the same situation.
I am an attorney and work for a very small firm (just me and the partner). I told him early on i was pregnant because of MS reasons. He asked me then (at 8 weeks) what my plans were and i told him I had to think about it (even though I new I was planning on taking at least a year off). At about 14 weeks he asked me again, and I told him I was planning on taking an extended leave. He asked if I was coming back, and I told him I couldn't expect him to keep the position open and that I was planning on taking at least a year off.
If you plan on having any sort of continued relationship with this firm, or if you want a recommendation from him, I would give him the three months notice that he is requesting. In my situtation, I need my bosses recommendation when i do decide to go back to work, so I cannot burn this bridge.
Obviously everyone wants to consider their best interest, but if you know there is no part time availlable then it doesn't make sense to tell him after you take maternity leave. That doesn't serve any purpose other than leaving him in a very tough situation. If you want to ask about part time again, earlier is the better time to ask. Maybe he can get someone part time before you go on maternity leave to train them and then hire a part time temp while you are on maternity leave.
