HELP :traveling with a dog
I am nervous, tomorrow I am driving up to NY with Bella by myself for the first time. She has made the trip a few times, but always with me and DH. We have a safety harness for her, but she always gets tangled, and I don't know how I am going to get her untangled if I am by myself driving. How do you travel with your large dogs??
This is a pic of Bella in her harness, the problem starts when she wants to lie down, and she spins and gets stuck Image Attachment(s):

Re: HELP :traveling with a dog
I am not help - bad mommy, I don't put Scout in a harness. We actually put up a net between the back and middle (station wagon) and keep him back there.
Good luck - just stop often!

Re: HELP :traveling with a dog
Get a gate that seperates the front from the back. This way she can't climb up front, but you don't have to worry about her getting tangled in the harness. It works really well.
This is the one I have...the 4 bar version...

Re: HELP :traveling with a dog
This may sound really bad, but we just got back from vaca w/ my dog and she sat in the back of our SUV, no crate or harness. She always sleeps in the car and was so good. If you feel safer, I think a crate is best.

This is how we travel with Casey. She gets in the car and lays down - if she gets up - she has to go potty and we know to pull over soon.
We drove all the way down to Florida with her in a Altime - my 85lb Golden

Re: HELP :traveling with a dog
With our dog we always just put her in the back, no harness, no crate. She lasy down fine and rides the whole way with no problems. Harnesses can cause more problems than good -- they get tangled, uncomfortbale for the dog, and forces her to stay in one spot (which can be uncomfortbale for them). If you have a small travel crate you can put that back there with her too.

Re: HELP :traveling with a dog
I used a dog seat belt once, and Bonnie threw up. And she just looked so uncomfortable so I havent used it since. She usually just lays down in the backseat or looks out the window and she never tries to get up front with us.

Re: HELP :traveling with a dog
When we travel with Yogi he just sleeps in the back seat and stays put. I know its terrible, but we don't use a harness or strap him in at all. But, my brother uses the seat protector with his dog. It keeps his pup from climbing into the front seat when they are driving. It is $25 from dog.com
