HELP! We found a tick on Lexie....update in 1st post
UPDATE: We found ANOTHER one on Lexie! We recently moved to a wooded area...guess we really need to be careful. I'm worried about my two little girls as well. I hate ticks.
I cannot believe it, but we felt something on the back of her neck, and it was a tick.
We were JUST at the vet yesterday getting the okay to start her on flea/tick meds (ordered them online last night).
DH used tweezers and tried to get the tick out but unfortunately the little bugger's head is still in there, which we know is bad. DH shaved Lexie's neck so we know where the spot is, and he rubbed vaseline on it (supposedly it suffocates the tick?). There is a red ring/rash around the spot...
Of course I am planning to run to the vet (4th time in 3 weeks, ack!) first thing tomorrow, but is there anything else I should do or know? We're so worried.

Just keep an eye on it. If it gets really red then call the vet. It should come out on its own. Can you try and get it with the tweezers?

Flea/tick meds? Why would you start her on meds at 3 months? Does she have a flea problem?
(i'm just curious because i have a 3 month old puppy too and i'm new at this whole dog thing... so... )

I believe flea season is march through october or so. Puppies can get fleas too.

We tried to pull out the head with tweezers but Lexie was too squirmy...we'll keep trying.

if it makes you feel better... i just found a tick on Jedi and i had to break out the tweezers. Luckily the tick only was able to get his front legs (whatever the proper term is ) into Jedi and i was able to get the rest off. But the whole tick thing makes me nervous because i have no clue what i'm doing.

I think she's referrring to Frontline or others that you put on the dogs skin to prevent fleas/ticks from sticking.

Do most people do this during the spring/summer months?? Give them frontline each month?

Yup...you start as soon as standing water melts, so right about now and continue until water freezes (that's when fleas and ticks go dormant).

I thought that Frontline and so forth are pretty strong and that you shouldn't use for more than 4 months. No?

Re: HELP! We found a tick on Lexie....
I've been using it on my dog for two years now...since we got here. I've never heard that you shouldn't use it for more than four months at a time.
If you live in an area where they can pick up ticks easily (and I do), it's much safer to use the Frontline than to try and remove all ticks and/or fleas. Besides the fact that they aren't able to contract diseases from the ticks with Frontline.
You will still find ticks on the dog though, just be warned. The ticks will die on the dog with the Frontline if they do dig in.
