Books on tape.
Allow him to listen to music on headphones while he is reading.
Offer incentives to complete assignments.
Make daily assignments a little shorter.

Re: help with adhd
Is he diagnosed with ADHD? I'm only asking because I work with a lot of LD kids. Sometimes they appear distracted because it's so hard to read the words and they get tired. He may be having trouble decoding as well. Goldi gave you great suggestions! You might also want to try a reward or incentive system. It can be as simple as checks in a grid that he can earn for staying focused and take home to show his parents. You might also want to try nonverbal reminders or cues to get back on task.

Ive heard chewing gum - but not sure if this is something we can do, although we do give them candy/snacks etc....
give a stress ball to squeeze while reading
