help with diagnosing PCOS/advice
My RE says that she didn't think I had it and my ultrasound was fine but, my cycles are long. Also, I think I got a fake surge this cycle because I got AF 8 days after my pos OPK. I am going for my CD3 test again today. I am seeing a dr who is a specialist in eastern medicine. She is convinced I have PCOS but, my RE said she didn't "think" I had it. Which means I would have undiagnosed IF. Any girls who have it did not have any other symptoms besides irreg periods?

Re: help with diagnosing PCOS/advice
My SIL only had irregular cycles and had tests done which determined she had PCOS. She got pregnant first cycle on Clomid. I believe that testosterone is one of the hormones that can indicate PCOS. Good Luck!
I'm not sure how they all were diagnosed, but I have four friends with PCOS - one has two children, one is pregnant with third, one had her first last month and my SIL is pregnant. So, PCOS does not mean you'll have problem conceiving!

Re: help with diagnosing PCOS/advice
Well, I have had problems conceiving so far. So, I guess its just making sure I am getting the right treatment. Thanks

I meant to say that with diagnosis and proper treatment there shouldn't be problems. Of the four girls I mentioned, all needed some intervention. Three used Clomid and tried on their own (one or two cycles on Clomid each), one used Clomid and IUI. Three of them tried for over a year before getting diagnosed and then conceived so quickly on Clomid.

Re: help with diagnosing PCOS/advice
I have it...never knew I had it...my cycles were so regular it was like clockwork...bloodtests and insulin glucose test will reveal it. GL

Re: help with diagnosing PCOS/advice
if you are getting positive OPKs with no ovulation, it is a TELLTALE sign of PCOS. a classic PCOS symptom is elevated LH - which is the hormone that causes a positive OPK. what ultimately convinced me to go to the RE was 5 days of +OPKs with no ovulation. PCOS is hard to d/x because it manifests differently in different people and there are no real standards for diagnosing it. i dont have cysts but i still have PCOS. i would ask your RE to d/x for CD3 blood results not just ultrasound alone. and if you dont trust her judgement def get a second opinion. good luck!

Re: help with diagnosing PCOS/advice
its hard to diagnose PCOS..my coworker was Unexplained IF for 10 years before she got pregnant with her 1st, develped gestational diabetes and then they diagnosed her with PCOS. on the other hand, my best friend had all the classic symptoms of PCOS, elevated testosterone, irregular cycles, etc.
both friends got pregnant on their own

Re: help with diagnosing PCOS/advice
I used to go to a if support group, and there was one girl there who had some symptoms of pcos, but the u/s looked fine. But her doc said that he still thought she had pcos. He said that you could have pcos even without cysts, esp if you have some of the other symptoms. hth!

Is this true even if I have had blood tests that have said i have ovulated? Can I maybe be ovulating some cycles and not others? Is the only solution to this clomid and IUIs? I am now getting alternative treatments and now having a regular period. I wanted to avoid clomid.

yes, i only ovulated every once in a while. you can still ovulate and have PCOS. are your cycles inconsistent in length?? mine were around 40-50 days when i ovulated and then other cycles i would go months without ovulating and need provera to start a new cycle. whether you ovulate or not isnt the prime indicator of PCOS.
as far as treatment - you dont necessarily have to do IUI, i did many cycles where i took meds for ovulation induction and then did timed intercourse with DH,. there are a lot of options as far as treatment, but you will need a real thorough diagnoses first so that you know exactly what the issues are and whats causing them. if your RE isnt already doing this and giving you answers, i suggest getting a second opinion from another RE. your RE should be able to give you a formal diagnoses and have a treatment plan that is specific towards your issues.
good luck!!

Re: help with diagnosing PCOS/advice
I do not have PCOS - determined by 3 RE's through blood test and ultrasounds, plus I had very regular periods and ovulated every month. However, when I started with IF treatment I was treated as a PCOS patient b/c each ovary on Day 3 had about 20 plus antra follicles, rather than the typical 8-10. So for IUI's and IVF, I was treated as a PCOS patient, but did not take metformin. So, for me, the diagnosis was not as important part, but dealing with the issus involved were most important. Wishing you lots of luck!!!
