HELP...gift for college freshman..

my cousin is going to college next year. we are very close and he's like a little brother to us. so my parents, brother, and i want to give him something value about $1k. originally we were going to get him a laptop but his parents got that for him already. college for me was almost 10 years ago so i don't really remember what else beside that and maybe a gift card. but i think we want to get him 1 big item.

any ideas?

g/c to wal-mart, or see if they have like campus cash or something... my school had it where you could put money on your ID and then use it at the bookstore and other place around campus (off campus too).

What about a few gift cards from places in the area including sueprmarket, gas station, coffee, school bookstore, Target or Walmart (whichever is in the area) etc. Stuff a kid would need on a daily basis.

where is he going to college? somewhere cold? you could get him a winter set. northface jacket, gloves, hat and then gift card in the coat pocket.


nintendo wii - if he doesnt already have it. i know my brother and his roommates play all they time, along with rockband.


how about a bose speaker system for his laptop?

ipod - im sure he already has this..

digital camera - i bought this for my brother as his graduation gift and he uses it allllll the time.

you could get a really nice watch but chances are he wont bring it to school with him.

oooo a coach ID money clip thing - i know theyre only like 50 bucks but the young boys all carry this now instead of a whole wallet. and you could put a gift card inside it.

Gift cards to local places are a great idea! When my cousin went to college, I filled a laundry basket with things like shampoo, boxes of various snacks, Tylenol, laundry detergent and other things you don't realize you need til it's time to need them, KWIM?

What about some of the stuff he would need for his dorm room? ie: refridgerator, microwave, bedding, storage crates, towels, sheets, etc... Those items tend to add up.

How about a visa or amex gift card, then its not really cash, but he can use it on whatever he needs, books, food, restaurants, etc. That's what I would do.
