Helping a smoker QUIT
My mother just had surgery Friday. I was so happy that she was able to come to my house for Easter BUT she went outside once an hour to SMOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was really upset...I don't know what to do. I guess its like people said about getting a family member to lose weight...they need to help themselves

Re: Helping a smoker QUIT
Trust me when I tell you, no matter the circumstance it is impossible to get someone to quit unless they want to
I suppose when DH is not allowed to hold his child he will realize that he needs to quit (he has been promising me for YEARS that he will quit).
ETA: I am also a former smoker. I quit Feb 8th 2003. I had to get rushed to the hospital & scared TO DEATH before stopping. I smoked almost 3 packs a day & smoked for 15 years.

Re: Helping a smoker QUIT
You cannot force a smoker to quit.
They have to WANT to quit. It's sad.

As an ex-smoker, it's one of the hardest things to do.
You can FM me if you need some advice.

Re: Helping a smoker QUIT
It is a horrible addiction! I quit January 30, 2007 and I still have days it's hard but I am SO proud of myself and I haven't gained a ton of weight either....a HUGE fear of mine!

Re: Helping a smoker QUIT
I understand your concerns. May 1 will be 2 years since I quit smoking after 10 years. People expressing their concerns with me did nothing but aggravate me. When my uncle suffered his third heart attack and they told him they refused to do anothe bypass operation because they didn't think he'd survive surgery I realized something. He might miss his 3 children's weddings/babies whatever because of cigarettes and that is something I am not willing to risk for myself and my future children. Thats what mattered to me most. Some people can think like that and others remain in denial but either way, I hate to say it, but nothing anyone else says means a thing.

Re: Helping a smoker QUIT
My mother smokes like a chimney. I've been trying to get her to quit her my whole life. If she hasn't stopped yet.. she never will. So sad. Horrible horrible habit.
