High density building on Long Island
Is this happening all over or just select towns?? Are they targeting low-average income towns to make it more affordable? Patchogue has been completely re-vamped. They have a great Main Street and it's a wonderful place to visit but do people really want to live in these towns?? Just curious of what everyone thinks...

Re: High density building on Long Island
I WANT my town to be re-vamped like Patchogue was! People don't often live ON Main St (unless they're young and single lol).
Our "Main Street" has about 19 empty storefronts and from what I hear rents are astronomical which makes little mom and pop shops difficult to sustain.
I don't think anyone is looking to build up an area where these storefronts don't already exist- residents and village/town officials just want to revitalize towns that already exist.
ETA: Of course people want to live in these towns! Look at Sayville, Babylon, Bayshore, Rockville Center, Massapequa Park,e tc. All of those have a vibrant, active village/downtown/Main St. and all are desirable areas.

Really? It wasn't created for drama. Just a discussion about these building projects happening all over the island.

I've never considered Patchogue low income at all...weird comment.
I mean when I think of low income towns that should be re-vamped...i think of Wyandanch, parts of Central Islip, parts of Hempstead...

I wish they'd do this in East Islip! Our main street is so blech. Islip's is so much nicer.

Re: High density building on Long Island
Oh Geeze I didn't say Patchogue was low income. They are charging 3000 a month for New Village apartments, that's far from low income. I was just wondering where else this is happening and if people are in favor of it? What does it bring to a town? Is it good for the schools?? And by high density I mean thousands of apartments, not a revitalization of a Main Street only. I only know of Huntington Station and I'm not familiar with how that one is.
The one they are building by us is going to be tax abated by 10 years. It's just a discussion...

High density building on Long Island
Never heard of "thousands" of apartments going up in small areas.... Haven't seen it so I can't comment on it.

Look up The Hub in Ronkonkoma, same builders at New Village in Patchogue.

Re: High density building on Long Island
The only thing i have to say is, this non stop building has to stop. LI is way overcrowded as it is. The roads can't handle it. The traffic is worse every 6 months. It's getting to be insane. They take every square inch of open space and build thousands of housing units on it. But we don't have the infrastructure to support it.
Too many cars on the road. Too much of a drain on resources.
It's way out of control and getting worse

Couldn't agree more in 4 years my commute has increased by 45 min. No other factors change still live and work in the same place same hours all the same just much more traffic I can't take it anymore

Agreed.
Another concern is building in areas where the school districts are already tight on resources.
I had a student move to the district I teach in from one of the districts mentioned above (not one with one of these large apartment complexes going up, though). He came from a class of 42. This was in a lower elementary grade.

High density building on Long Island
I grew up in and lived in western nassau and have now moved to eastern nassau, so I have a different view on it, I guess. I do think that they are building up more farther east, though... but for someone from western nassau, it doesn't seem as bad...

Driving through Nassau County in general gives me a migraine... so much traffic ALL the time. I'm hoping Suffolk doesn't turn into that!

Agreed. The job market, IMO, seems tight still. Where are all these people working to afford to live on LI? Are they all commuting to the city?

Port Jeff station is working on a revitalize plan. Store rents are cheaper than in the village, but still a lot. Apts in PJS are also lower (but still high) than the village
There's a bakery moving into Main Street in pjs, and there's a craft brewery opening too. I think it's gonna go like that - one by one, biz owners will see others are moving in and enjoying the lower rent.
They are also building an apt building. I don't think it's for affordable housing though.
Upper port is neglected in many ways and it's sad. But there is potential there for sure.

High density building on Long Island
So many young families live in patchogue and love it. If we can get some young professionals in new village who decide to stay local when they have a family how is that a bad thing? If I were young and single I would love to live in a town where I could walk to restaurants and shops. I spent way too much to live alone in an apartment when I was young and it was so boring. I drove 40+minutes on weekends to see friends and hang out in bars including in patchogue! The whole Trac exempt thing in the hub is ridiculous though.

To answer your question , yes. I would live in patchogue. I think the General LI mentality of what defines a "bad area" is frankly a joke .. Jmo.
