High fever....should you wake at the time more Motrin needs to be given?
DS has had a high fever all day.
At 7:30pm we gave motrin.
At 8:30pm noticed he was BURNING. Rectal temp of 105
Called the ped. She said to give Tylenol & check temp 40 minutes later.
At 9:15pm temp was 101.
SO...now do I wake him to give Motrin at the 6 hour mark or if leave it until he wakes? I am worried about the fever getting so high again

I would monitor that fever through the night and medicate if he needs it. High fevers can cause other problems.
Hope he feels better soon!

I always did and do. They barely stay awake to take the medicine and even when I would do rectal temps on them. Gives me peace of mind.

Yes. I asked this question to my SIL who is a nurse at Stonybrook when DS was sick last week. She said for a high fever, wake them throughout the night. Rotate tylenol/motrin every 3 hours. ETA: She said this is what they do in the hospital for babies who come in.

Same here! DS #1 gets high fevers (doesnt anymore since he had his tonsils out knock on wood ) and I always alternated tylenol/motrin but every 4 hours as recommended by my ped. and the ER dr's.

i was only in that situation once, but DS was able to take the medicine in his sleep. I lifted him with one arm so he wasn't totally flat, gave him the med, he swallowed, and continued sleeping.
Hope he feels better soon!!

Poor baby:( I would let him sleep if he does not feel warm. DD's temp has hit 106.5 That happened a couple times at night-I would check on her and if she was cool I would not wake her. If her temp was going up, I would know it because she would be uncomfortable and wake up. My ped also said it was ok to let her sleep. However, if you feel you can't tell if he's running a fever, or you are more comfortable waking to give medicine, I don't see anything wrong with that. eta: Going from 105 to 101 in 40 minutes is great! One of the peds I spoke to said 1 point every hour is fine as long as it is going down.

When Kaydyn spiked a fever of 105+ the ped said to wake her up and give her the motrin every six hours...even in the middle of the night. She felt so sick she went right back to sleep.
Hope he feels better. We missed you today
