High School Bans American Flag
what are your thoughts about this?
IMO, completely outrageous!
SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. – On the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, students at one high school were not allowed to wear clothes with an American flag.
Under a new school rule, students at Hobbton High School are not allowed to wear items with flags, from any country, including the United States.
including the United States. The new rule stems from a controversy over students wearing shirts bearing flags of other countries. Gayle Langston said her daughter, Jessica, was told to remove her Stars and Stripes t-shirt. “Today she wanted to wear her shirt, and I had to tell her no,” said Langston. “She didn't like it at all because I knew it would get her in trouble. Of all days, 9/11, she could not wear her American Flag shirt.” The superintendent of schools in Sampson County calls the situation unfortunate, but says educators didn’t want to be forced to pick and choose which flags should be permissible.

Re: High School Bans American Flag
It depends on why they banned flag shirts. If they had gang problems or something like that, it's a totally valid ban and if flags are banned, flags are banned.

Re: High School Bans American Flag
When my dad was in the navy (late 60s), wearing an article of clothes with the flag on it was considered disrespectful - a kind of desecration of the flag, because the flag has to be altered in order for it to appear on clothes..
I didn't read the whole article, but that might be where this is coming from and if it is I don't think it's such a horrific idea.

Why would wearing ANY flag on an article of clothing be 'banned' ?? - They can go to school in skirst so short you can see their a s s cheeks, but it's 'offensive' of wear a county's flag on your Tshirt ??

Re: High School Bans American Flag
A public school, funded by this government, prohibited the American flag?
I DO agree with rules that forbid desecration of the flag- like flag underwear, or the flag on the bottom of a shoe, etc.
But, a shirt depicting the flag or a flag pin shouldn't be a problem or offensive to anyone...

I think you mean desecration of the flag...
And I don't think they banned the American flag itself. I think they banned shirts or clothing depicting the American flag.
I'm curious as to why. Like someone else said, if it had to do with gang activity, then I understand it. Then again, it could be for a bogus reason I'd disagree with. It would be nice to have more information.
Some NCAA gear (seems harmless enough to wear sports stuff) is banned in certain schools b/c gangs use them to identify members, for example.

Re: High School Bans American Flag
I saw a recent newstory where flags of any nation were not permitted to be worn or displayed in a school - it created some sort of tension or fights. Something like that. I think it would be discriminatory to ban some flags but not all.
And actually, according the Flag Code:
The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

Under a new school rule, students at Hobbton High School are not allowed to wear items with flags, from any country, including the United States.
So it's any flag from anywhere.
Let me play devil's advocate.
If a student is wearing oh let's say an Iraqi flag on his shirt in this world climate does anyone think a high school student would have the self control not to confront them? I'm not saying it's right or wrong just trying to give a different perspective as to why they may have done this. I think that they feel if they let students wear the American flag then they would have to let them wear any flag and are trying to avoid a situation. Too bad things have come to this.
I agree with this to a point - but we are in 'AMERICA', Americans should be able to wear an American Flag shirt or whatever. If these other families - don't like that they are wearing American things then they shouldn't have their children here in America
edited - cause my headache is causing misspelling

this is what I was talking about. People forget about things like this. Wearing your flag is actually NOT an honorable thing, though many think it is.

I love living in the US, don't get me wrong, but why should my child have to pledge their allegiance to the country and the flag just to go to public school?
Sorry, off topic.
Wearing a flag is certainly not the only way of showing patriotism. Schools should encourage patriotism by teaching civics and encouraging students to get involved in their local government and in volunteer work to make their town/city/nation the best it can be.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.. but I always thought that wearing an ACTUAL FLAG is not permitted (like stated above). But if it is a picture of the flag on a shirt, that is acceptable.
I'm not at all a flag wearer, but I think it's ridiculous. Are they also banning having the American flag on display (like in auditoriums)? Because if you're going to ban it, then don't do it half a$$ed. Don't be hypocritical.

and as for the pledge of allegiance. I never questioned. it was a part of school for me everyday... and for many years before I was in school.
just b/c some atheist doesn't want his kid saying it b/c of "God", doesn't mean everyone has to stop saying it.

Re: High School Bans American Flag
IMO, this is a correct thing to do if you gonna not let others not wear pictures representing your nation. Regardless of the flag or the country you live in, why does one (american flag) can be displayed when an others can't?
That is a form of discrimanation...and thats the last thing someone wants to deal with...
You can be proud of your country without wearing a picture of a flag.
Nobody is talking about what Brentwood did in rescricting a lot of types of colthing so colors don't promote gang volience or show status some one has money and buys colthes when others don't.
